Archaeological Survey of India, in an affidavit submitted to Delhi high court last week, ASI said it couldn’t allow construction of a visitors’ car parking near Red Fort as it forms part of the world heritage site’s buffer zone, and Unesco guidelines prohibit any such consideration. Instead, ASI suggested that a small portion of the Madhav Dass Park that lies outside the buffer zone of the Red Fort complex and can accommodate up to 60 cars, be considered. So it seems that the Archaeological Survey of India has put its foot down against the construction of a visitors’ car parking in Madhav Dass Park near Red Fort as part of the ongoing Chandni Chowk pedestrianisation project.
