Anjali was born in a conservative Muslim family in Calicut as a boy named Jamsheer. She lost her mother when she was 9 months old. During her childhood, Anjali realized that she was trapped in a wrong body and wished to get it fixed.

Anjali had faced hurtful incidents in her life where people teased for her walk and acts. At the age of 18, she left home and reached Coimbatore. From begging in the streets to modeling, Anjali earned money for her sex-change surgery and became a complete woman.

Anjali represented many brands and was chosen as the cover girl in many popular magazines. But the label of being a 'transsexual' couldn't win her much fame.

Seeing a news report on Anjali, actor Mammootty recommended her to film director Ram and she was subsequently selected for his forthcoming bilingual (Tamil and Malayalam) movie.

Anjali became the first transsexual to play a lead role (alongside Mammootty in his forthcoming release) in an Indian film. The film was applauded in many International film festivals and is slated for release in India soon.
