CISF responds to Sudhaa Chandran's complaint of being asked to remove her prosthetic limb at the airport; read what transpired

On October 21, veteran actress Sudhaa Chandran was flying for work purposes but she was stopped at the airport. Sudhaa, who is specially abled and uses a prosthetic leg, was asked to remove it for ETD. The actress felt hurt and made an appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to issue a special card for such circumstances. Read here what followed:

Sudhaa Chandran feels hurt

Sudhaa Chandran expressed her disappointment towards the Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) for security reasons at the airport. The actress said that every time she travels, she is asked to remove her prosthetic limb, which is hurtful and painful. She posted a video on Instagram and wrote: "Totally hurt ....each time going thru this grill is very very hurting....hope my message reaches the state Nd central govt authorities....and expecting a prompt action."Sudhaa also expressed her grief over how women of this country shall not be this disrespectful to each other.

Appeal to PM Modi

Sudhaa Chandran pleaded to PM Narendra Modi about altering the process and issuing a card for people, who have artificial hands, limbs attached. So that they don't have to go through the process of removing the prosthetics at the airport.

CISF extends an apology

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) responded to veteran actress Sudhaa Chandran after her compain and extended an apology. The tweet read, "We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused to Ms. Sudhaa Chandran. As per protocol, prosthetics are to be removed for security checks only under exceptional circumstances."

CISF assures to examine the matter

They also assured of investigating the matter through this tweet that read: "We will examine why the lady personnel concerned requested Ms. Sudhaa Chandran to remove the prosthetics. We assure Ms.Sudhaa Chandran that all our personnel will be sensitised again on the protocols so that no inconvenience is caused to travelling passengers." These tweets were made before the CISF spokesperson spoke to TOI.

CISF: We never asked her to remove it

Later, Anil Pandey, a CISF spokesperson, told TOI, "We have specifically briefed our staff members at all the airports to ensure that no passenger should feel that they are being humiliated because of a prosthetic limb. We take utmost care and have a humanitarian approach while frisking all passengers including those with prosthetic limbs. Sudhaa Chandran is a renowned actress, but even a non-celebrity is never asked to remove their artificial limb. We don't know why she claimed it, but she was never asked to remove it. It is a practice followed by the CISF to not ask anyone to remove any prosthetic limbs." In 2017, the CISF claimed that they stopped the practice of asking people with disabilities (PWDs) to remove their prosthetics.
