Kolkata’s Durga Puja is one of the most spectacular festivals in the country. It is unlike any other, halting the entire state of West Bengal, as people indulge in a week-long revelry. The festival marks the coming of Goddess Durga to her parental home, where she stays for a few days, before she returns to Lord Shiva’s abode at the end of the festival. Now for the first time, Kolkata will see female priests take lead at the famed 66 Pally Puja in the city’s Rash Behari Avenue.
According to senior office-bearer of the puja committee, Pradyuna Mukherjee, "four women are all scholars having great command on scriptures, professors in their respective fields, and fit the bill as a worshipper of the goddess in every possible way."
It has been further reported that the puja committee will continue the tradition next year, if the women priestesses are approved this year. It also depends on whether the priestesses would be willing to continue their association with the puja.
66 Pally’s theme for this year’s Durga Puja is Mayer Haate Mayer Abahon, which is translated to Mother goddess will be worshipped by mothers.
