India: 65 lighthouses to be developed into tourist hotspots

Lighthouse tourism in India is all set for a big haul, which forms an interesting tourism feature all across the world. Since lighthouses are located close to the coastline, these structures offer an alternative option to experience the beauty of the spot.

As per the latest reports, the Parliament has passed the Marine Aids To Navigation 2021, which would help develop lighthouses as tourist destinations. Reportedly, 65 lighthouse sites have been developed so far, which would be developed into tourist hotspots, in public private partnership mode.
Reportedly, one of the lighthouses that would be developed for this project will be the Mandvi Lighthouse in Gujarat, which overlooks the Arabian Sea and is built on the Mandvi Fort. The said lighthouse is located at a distance of 8 km away from the Mandvi Beach, and will get enhanced facilities to cater to visitor’s needs.
The other lighthouses identified are spread across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Odisha, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Also, as per the Marine Aids To Navigation 2021, the historical and traditional values of lighthouses would need to be preserved.

Further, the ministry stated that with regard to the potential of India in terms of tourism, this plan is expected to boost tourism in the regions. It further added that the Ministry has recognised the untapped potential for tourism on the vast coastlines of the country, and is working toward opening up lighthouses for tourism opportunities through the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL).
