If you are planning to travel to the most offbeat places in India this coming year, we suggest you start with Haflong in Assam. It is the headquarters of the Dima Hasao District in Assam. This hill town is the only hill station in Assam, and is one of the least explored places in the state.

Places in northeast India that are shrouded in mystery
Before India’s independence, Haflong was a part of the Dimasa Kingdom. A lot of architectural remains from that period can still be seen in and around Haflong town. Haflong is great for adventure travellers and we bring you some of the most interesting ways you can explore Haflong and neighbouring areas.
Visit Borail Wildlife Sanctuary
Though one of the lesser-known wildlife sanctuaries in India, the Borail Wildlife Sanctuary is a treasure trove of unique wildlife experiences in Assam. Explore the Borail wilderness to see animals like the slow loris, hoolock gibbon, capped langur, Assamese macaque, Himalayan black bear, clouded leopard to name a few. You can also stay at the Borail Eco Camp, a community initiative in collaboration with the state forest department.
Explore the history of Maibang town
Located around 48 km from the main Haflong town, Maibong is where you will get to see the architectural remains of the erstwhile Dimasa Kingdom (16th to 18th century). The most famous of all is the monolithic monument Longthai ni Noh or the stone house of the Dimasa King.
Birdwatching in Jatinga
Jatinga is just five km from Haflong town, a destination every birdwatcher should have on their birding wishlist. The Jatinga Bird Watching Centre is the place you need to visit. From here, views of the neighbouring hills are spectacular and the forest is teeming with birdlife, resident and migratory. Go with a guide to spot the endemic birds.
Experience the Panimoor waterfalls
Panimoor Falls can be an exciting day trip from Haflong. Located approximately 120 km from Haflong, Panimoor is on the Kopili River, and is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist spots in the district. The raging water turns milky white as it hits the rocks. Panimoor is a landscape photographer’s delight.
Ethnic Village
Located near Jatinga, the Ethnic Village is a place where you can see the traditional life of the Dimasa people. The tourist village is very popular among the local tourists. There are traditional dormitories and houses that you can visit.
