India is recognised as one of the world's megadiverse countries, home to an extraordinary range of ecosystems that support thousands of plant species. From the misty slopes of the Western Ghats to the remote hills of the Northeast, several flowers have evolved in isolation over centuries, adapting to highly specific climatic and geographical conditions. The result is a remarkable collection of endemic blooms that exist nowhere else in the wild. Here are five of the most remarkable examples of flowers that are unique to India.

It grows only in the Shirui Hills in Ukhrul district and only flowers from late May till early June, when its slopes come alive with its pale pink blossoms. The Shirui Lily was discovered in the wilds of Manipur in 1946 by a British botanist Frank Kingdon-Ward and named (Lilium mackliniae) in honor of his wife, Jean Macklin. Later, the flower became widely renowned after winning prizes at the Royal Horticultural Society Flower Show in London.Where: Shirui Hills, Manipur

Neelakurinji

One of the best-known flowering phenomena in India is the Neelakurinji. The plant, which covers certain areas of the Western Ghats in shades of blue and purple, only blooms once every 12 years.
Flowering of this plant on a massive scale is an unusual natural phenomenon called gregarious flowering, which is followed by seed formation and life cycle completion. The last time it flowered was in 2018, while the next flowering will occur in 2030 in several places.Where: Western Ghats in Kerala and Tamil Nadu

Nilgiri Lily

Among the rare endemic lilies of India, there is the Nilgiri Lily. As its name suggests, it is endemic to the Nilgiri Hills and bears large trumpet-shaped flowers and grows in the montane grasslands of Southern Western Ghats. Degradation and alterations of its habitat caused its population to be endangered, so this plant became rare to encounter. Nevertheless, for a botanist, it is one of the most important endemic flowers in India.Where: Nilgiri Hills, Tamil Nadu

Because of its beauty, the species is highly targeted by collectors, making conservation all the more difficult. Rediscovery of the orchid can be counted as one of the greatest botanical discoveries related to India's endemic flora.Where: Kerala and Tamil Nadu
