The beautiful princely state of Rajasthan is renowned for rich customs and traditions. The state is known for its colourful folk dances and performances, which are a part of the tradition and every dance form here has a significant history attached to it. Have a look at some of the most captivating traditional folk dances of Rajasthan:
Kalbeliya
The dance belongs to the snake-charmers of the state. The dance performance is also recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Heritage. It involves elaborate ethnic attire, heavy make-up and jewellery. Women dance while men play the musical instruments like dholak, khanjari and pungi.
Gair
Another popular Bhil community dance, gair is performed during important Indian festivals such as Holi and Janmashtami. Men and women dress up in vibrant costumes and make-up. Men artists also carry a stick, arrow and sword.
Kachchhi Ghodi
This one is a folklore genre that narrates tales of local bandits. The dance was first performed in Shekhawati region of Rajasthan and was performed by men dressed in dhoti kurta and turbans. The artists get inside a puppet horse and perform the dance at weddings and other public gatherings.
Ghoomar
Ghoomar is one of the globally-recognised traditional folk dance forms that originated in Rajasthan. From colourful dresses and graceful moves, beautifully swaying to twirling around, everything about this dance form is simply beautiful. The dance belongs to the Bhil community that dancers used to perform for kings in ancient times.
Bhavai
Rajathani women are excellent in balancing and bhavai dance is all about balancing pots on head and dancing along. Several Rajasthani communities perform this dance, including Meena, Bhil and Kalbelia. The artists have years of training and it is fascinating to see dancers performing stunts on music.
