Must-do activities during your Kerala trip
Kerala is one of the popular attractions in India, and is for all the good reasons. Its breathtakingly beautiful setting and unique culture make Kerala an indulgent place, where you can visit to create memories of a lifetime.
With a mix of beautiful beaches, backwaters, and scenic landscape, this place offers a lot of things to do. Here, we have compiled a list of such must-do things during a trip to Kerala, check this out.
Stay in houseboat
A trip to Kerala will not be considered complete if you don’t experience cruising in the backwaters. The sight of villages and houses lining the backwaters, palm-fringed landscape, and a wide range of wildlife takes the houseboat cruising to the next level. You can opt to book a homestay or a hotel along the route to ensure you have a crazy experience when here.
Enjoy a shikara ride
Visit Alleppey from this wonderful experience. Famed for scenic backwaters, beautiful narrow canals and lush greenery, cruising through the waters is not only hyped, but also one of the best experiences of Alleppey backwaters. These rides will be of around 3 to 4 hours, and will take you around villages, and that too without breaking the bank. Plus, if you love bird watching, this experience will be one to remember.
Opt for a spice tour
When here, be sure that you enjoy a tour of the plantations, and enjoy the taste of some authentic cardamon, black pepper, cinnamon, and much more. It’s one of those things that will give you immense pleasure and enrich your experience. Do note that most hotels also offer these tours in their packages, and you can even opt to visit on your own too. On these tours, you can also buy authentic, fresh spices at subsidised rates.
Visit Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Periyar National Park is one of the popular attractions of Kerala and serves as the home to a plethora of wildlife. Complemented with hilly forests, this national park remains open even in monsoons unlike others in South India. Surrounded by a beautiful lake and nestled in the Western Ghats, this place also offers a range of ecotourism activities to ensure you have a memorable time here.
Get Ayurvedic treatments
Kerala is the hub of all Ayurvedic centres, and is definitely one of the best places to get one. If you plan to visit during the monsoon season, do know that it’s the best time to get into one of those centres to rejuvenate their mind and body. This is also the best time when the weather remains pleasant, and the ambience turns conducive for receiving such therapies.
Witness real action in the form of Kalaripayattu
It’s an ancient martial art form that is practised in Kerala. Its roots can be traced back to 2000 BC, and features not only fighting with combative techniques and weapons, but also healing methods. You can also opt to attend a fighting demonstration that can be 60-minute long, and get to witness real action live.
Watch snake boat race
Kerala hosts these colourful snake boat races every year during the monsoon season. This race is usually celebrated from July to September, especially during the Onam festival. Almost all the villages participate in this race; they have their own particular snake boat to differentiate from the others, and each has a unique style and size. Both the event and the building of such boats form a unique part of their culture. These days, these races feature scheduled tournaments too.
Spend some time with elephants
Kerala is one of those places where you can grab the opportunity of getting up close and personal with the elephants. Yes, you read that right. For this, set off for a tour to Elephant Junction in Thekkady, where you can not only spend some moments with the elephants, but can also bathe with one. The resort has various programs on offer to ensure visitors have the best time of their life when here. Pick the program that suits your requirements and you are good to go.
