At the north-western corner of San Francisco (right near the Wave Organ) is a stunning hike with cliff-top views over the Pacific Ocean, which winds along the edge of the ocean, through fields of wildflowers, and centuries old shipwrecks. The hiking around here is pretty easy and suitable to all ages. However make sure you stick to the paths, and away from the edge of steep and eroding cliffs. Start your walk by dropping in the the Lands End Lookout (really a visitor’s centre). From here, walk north along the Coastal Trail. We recommend stopping in at the Sutro Baths ruins, an abandoned saltwater swimming pool complex.
The hikes combine stunning views of the Pacific Ocean with great views back towards the city itself, including the Golden Gate Bridge. There are plenty of beaches and places to have a secluded picnic. The main trail is around 1.5 miles, with plenty of paved sections. There are quite a few sections of stairs, but plenty of spots to rest as well. Keep your eyes out for shorebirds including cormorants, and oyster-catchers.
