Omkareshwar Temple
Madhya Pradesh is home to one of the sacred Jyotirlinga temples in India (there are 12 such temples in the country). The Omkareshwar Temple here is absolutely beautiful and settled peacefully on an island called Mandhata, near Khandwa city by the Narmada. The speciality of the island lies in the fact that it’s shaped as ॐ symbol (OM).
Mamleshwar Temple
It is another Jyotirlinga temple in Madhya Pradesh dedicated to Lord Shiva. The real name of this temple is Amreshwar Temple, and it’s a protected monument that showcases the exceptional architectural style of ancient India. It is also among the oldest temples in Madhya Pradesh, believed to be built in the 10th century.
Mahakaleshwar Temple
Mahakaleshwar is another spectacular Jyotirlinga temple in Madhya Pradesh and holds immense religious significance. The lingam here is believed to be swayambhu meaning ‘born of itself’. This ancient temple is situated in the holy city of Ujjain on the side of River Shipra.
Kandariya Mahadeo Temple
A part of the famed Khajuraho Group of Temples, Kandariya Mahadeo holds a unique charm of its own. The temple was built in the year 1050 BC and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is known for being decorated with ornate carvings and some 900 sandstone sculptures!
Saas Bahu Temple
Situated in Gwalior, Saas Bahu or the Sahastrabahu Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple was built by King Mahipala. One of the most amazing things about this temple is its current name, which is believed to be so because of years of mispronunciation! It’s a beautiful temple with elaborate carvings on the wall, showcasing magnificent artistic skills.
Kal Bahirav Temple
Believed to be the guardian of Ujjain city, Kal Bhairav is one of the most visited temples in Madhya Pradesh. Kal Bhairav is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The temple is also set on the banks of River Shipra.
Chaturbhuj Temple
Situated in the historic town of Orchha, this fort-style temple was built in the 15th century by Raja Madhukar. Chaturbhuj means the one with four arms and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is considered an architectural wonder with ornate decorations done on the walls. The temple is also renowned for being home to one of the tallest vimana (the tallest structure of the temple) among Hindu temples at 344 ft.
Adinath Temple
It is one of the most beautiful Jain temples in India and Madhya Pradesh. The temple in Khajuraho is dedicated to the Jain tirthankara Adinatha, and is also a part of UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Khajuraho Group of Monuments.
