Historical sites to explore in northeast India
Till now, we all have known northeast India as a naturally and culturally rich region of the country. However, how many of us are actually aware of the historical side and significance of northeast India? The region is equally rich and has its own share of historic events which have changed the course of history. There are several important sites and monuments in this part of the country which bear the testament of the bygone time.
Let’s have a look at some of the most important historical sites to explore in northeast India.
Talatal Ghar, Assam
This is an 18th century palace and military base in Rangpur, Assam. The palace is only 4 km from Sivasagar. For those who don’t know, this is one of the largest monuments built by the Ahom dynasty ever.
Ujjayanta Palace, Tripura
A former royal palace in Tripura, Agartala, Ujjayanta Palace was constructed in 1901. You’ll immediately fall in love with the pretty tiled floors and carved wooden ceilings of the palace. It was Rabindranath Tagore who named it 'Ujjayanta Palace'. He was a regular visitor to Tripura and the palace. There’s also a pretty library, public halls and Durbar Hall.
Neermahal, Tripura
Also known as the ‘Lake Palace of Tripura', Neermahal is simply gorgeous. It is also the largest palace of its kind in the country. Visitors get wowed by its architectural beauty. Set in the heart of Rudrasagar Lake, this palace is one of the two water palaces in the whole nation.
Kangla Fort, Manpur
Also known as the Kangla Palace, the Kangla Fort in Manipur is set on the bank of the Imphal River. In old Meetei, Kangla means the prominent part of the dry land. It used to be the seat of the past Meetei rulers of Manipur and served as the royal palace of King Pakhangba. It’s a great historical tourist attraction in the state.
Ita Fort, Itanagar
Not many are aware of this historic fort in Itanagar. One of the best offbeat forts in the country, the Ita Fort was built in the 14th century and is counted among the oldest forts in the northeast region situated in the Papum Pare district. Ita means brick in the Ahom language. The stone work and design of the building is simply gorgeous.
Devi Dol, Assam
Devi Dol is a centuries old temple in Sivasagar district, Assam. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and a large number of devotees visit here from every corner of the country. Dol means temple and this temple has Shiva Dol on one side and Vishnu Dol on the other.
Ahom Raja's Palace, Assam
A historic structure in Garhgaon, Assam, Ahom Raja’s Palace is a beautiful four-storey palace built by king Rajeswar Singha in 1752. It’s a dome-shaped structure which contains a chamber. There were four watchtowers but only two survived.
