A visit to any place feels incomplete without a trip to the local markets. There is something about the local markets, a strange yet pleasant pull that brings travellers closer to that particular place. It’s no secret that marketplace is one such place where one can come face to face with culture and tradition. Be it people or the food or various objects on sale, the market is a universe in itself where everything comes together in a beautiful way.
Here are some of the popular and very interesting local markets that you need to explore on your visit to Cambodia.
Siem Reap Night Market
Also called Angkor Night Market, this market is located in Sivutha Street in Siem Reap. This market is wildly popular with tourists visiting Siem Reap. Many stalls offer great Cambodian fast food. Savour the local delicacies while visiting this market.
Tonlé Sap Floating Market
Tonlé Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and is a Biosphere Reserve as declared by UNESCO. The lake is a part of the great Mekong river system and supports many people who live in the lake area. Here, you will find the bustling Tonlé Sap Floating Market, where the locals sell their goods to the visiting locals and tourists. Here, the locals also provide speed boat rides for a fee.
Central Market
An art deco landmark, the Central Market in Phnom Penh is a stunning structure dating back to 1937. It is one of the largest markets in Asia, and you will find a multitude of stalls under the iconic grand yellow coloured dome here.
Phnom Penh Night Market
Locally called Phsar Reatrey, the Phnom Penh night market is a happening place to say the least. A very popular spot among the younger crowd, the market is a place to hang out, have good food, enjoy live performances and, of course, shop for knick knacks. Come on the weekends if you want to experience the energetic Cambodia.
Russian Market
If there ever was a market especially for the tourists…The locals call it Phsar Toul Tom Poung, and this is one of the best and the most popular places for local handicrafts. So, if you are one of those who must bring back a souvenir or ten, this is the place for you. Visit the Russian Market, bargain you must! The Russian market is in Phnom Penh.
