Sheldon Cooper loves trains, we love trains, and we don't know anybody who doesn't; chances are, you won't know anyone with a dislike for train journeys. One of the most comfortable modes of travel, train journeys blend the inside with outside, bringing in the landscape as you pore over the sceneries outside. If you are making a wishlist for 2023, the new year, these are some of the most beautiful train journeys in the world that you should definitely go for.
British Pullman, England
A trip aboard the very luxurious British Pullman is a lifetime's memory and so are its journeys. It is one of the most luxe and comfortable modes to soak in the buzz of the UK, and you can definitely sign up for journeys to the Southwest England, Somerset route (for the Jane Austen feel), the rustic charm of Southeast England and more.
Other than the scenery outside, you will have the true joys of a train journey, made complete with Michelin-star chefs planning your meals aboard.
Blue Train, Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's Blue Train became a rage for travellers and photographers a few years back, with spectacular shots of this train's journey between Kandy to Ella. The trip starts from Colombo, spanning 140 km, and is one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. Tea manors, lush jungles, mountains - this journey has it all and more.
Konkan Railway, India
Konkan Railway's route between Delhi to Goa and Mumbai to Goa is believed to turn surprisingly beautiful as you get closer to the Konkan region. The coastal sections of Konkan Railway that spans the very famous Pamban Bridge is also a sight to behold. Book yourself a First Class coach aboard this and you will cherish the trip for a lifetime.
Rocky Mountaineer, Canada
Another of the world's prettiest train journeys, the Rocky Mountaineer gives you the choice of four different routes. Out of these, Circle Journeys is the our favourite of the lot since it lets the passenger combine two different routes. Its most popular stops are Jasper National Park, Kamloops, Banff, Vancouver, Ruby Canyon, Mount Garfield and more.
Maharajas Express, India
This is one of the most luxurious trains in India and an experience in itself. You can choose from different journeys aboard Maharajas Express, including the Heritage of India, Indian Splendour, Treasures of India, and the Indian Panorama. Our favourite out of these is the Indian Panorama (6 nights/7 days) that takes passengers across Delhi - Jaipur - Ranthambore - Fatehpur Sikri - Agra - Orchha - Khajuraho - Varanasi - Delhi.
Seven Stars in Kyushu, Japan
This is one of Japan's most luxurious sleeper trains, connecting seven prefectures of Kyushu. You can choose from a couple of different routes in this, and we specially like the 4D/3N journey that also covers the rightly famous and otherworldly Miyazaki Prefecture. There is another route that is a must-visit for the foodies. Choose this if you are looking for a really offbeat train journey in the new year.
Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express, Russia
This is one of the most famous trains in the world, and enjoys a cult status in the world of travel. You can choose from three different routes in your journey aboard this, and our favourite here is the Eastbound route (Moscow - Kazan -Yekaterinburg - Novosibirsk - Irkutsk - Lake Baikal - Uland Ude - Ulaan Baatar - Vladivostok) for the sheer change of landscape and experiences that it offers.
Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Europe
Another luxe experience by Belmond, this train operates across more than 60 routes and even offers 1-night journeys if you do not want to spend a lot. We have no clear favourites for this one as some of Europe's prettiest places fall on different routes here, from Paris to Prague to Verona, Venice, Budapest and so many more.
