Visiting Rameshwaram is incomplete without bathing at 22 Theerthams (or holy tanks). Start from Agni Theertham at the sea situated near the temple. As per legend, Lord Rama had requested sea goddess to remain calm here so the sea is unusually calm here. Each of the tanks has a special significance in history and devotees associate varying beliefs with each of the tanks. If you plan to do this, it is a must to wear traditional clothes and ensure that you leave all electronic items where you are staying. You may need the services of a guide to help you do this in the right order. It is customary to donate the wet clothes to the needy after the bath.
