Mumbai to Ahmedabad Tejas Express is now going to charge your extra for excess baggage. According to reports, IRCTC took this decision to now allow passengers to carry extra baggage for a fee, thereby making it the first train in India to make such a rule. Thus, this is the first time that a train is going to follow baggage rules like those followed in flights. According to sources, IRCTC is going to charge more than INR 100 for excess luggage.
According to an official in IRCTC, passengers who are carrying more than 70 kg of luggage in the Executive Chair Car, and above 40 kg in the Chair Car, will be charged an additional fee. The IRCTC official also mentioned that such a rule is applicable in other long-distance trains, but has not been implemented due to alack of resources. This rings true, as these rules are not really new. There are a set of rules that are supposed to be implemented, such as, AC First Class passengers are permitted 70 kg, while AC Second Class passengers are permitted 35 kg.
India’s first private train, Tejas Express, runs for six hours from Mumbai to Ahmedabad and has an automated door closing system. Another reason for such a rule getting implemented in the train to maintain the smooth function of this automated door closing system. Carrying excess luggage can lead to a delay in the closing of the door, which will then lead to a delay in the journey. Attendees in the train have been tasked with the job of weighing the luggage.
