Bern

Bear is known to the world as a ferocious animal. But then, there is no denying that it also has the most adorable and innocent eyes. Bern, which was named after a bear, is that adorable and innocent city. There are many people, including travellers, who often forget that this medieval town is the actual capital of Switzerland and despite the crown, Bern is as humble as a city could possibly be and is capable of enthralling you in unimaginable ways. The population is tiny, around 127,000, but this does not hinder this Swiss charmer from being an artistic paradise. A large number of students and diplomats have called it home and continue to do so perhaps because of the positivity exuded by Bernese air. This could be the reason why Bern has consistently been ranked as one of the best cities to live in.
Situated along the banks of the Aare River, Bern is mostly loved by hikers because it is the perfect gateway to the Swiss Alps but with the most beautiful gardens, never-ending shopping promenades and gothic cathedrals that are home to the most intricate of carvings. The city deserves an exclusive visit. Moreover, the Old Town in the centre, which is replete with history and legends, is yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bern might be old-fashioned and slightly laid-back when compared to other metropolises but that’s the charm of this place. Take some time out and visit Barengraben or the Bear Pit and the Rose Garden as there’s so much joy in reading while sitting comfortably on the grass, surrounded by trees and fragrant blooms. Both provide this opportunity along with arresting views of the canton. And then, if you are lucky, you might be able to witness a mighty bear or two. I was in love with Bern. I still am.
