Vineyards

If the apple plantation wasn’t enough, you can head straight to the vineyards in the surroundings of Bolzano and beyond. From small family owned vineyards to huge industrial fields and from mountain slopes to flat plains, you’ll see areas totally covered in vines with bunches of grapes hanging down in the right season. And of course, grapes mean wine, so if you are a connoisseur of this typically Italian drink, you could easily spend weeks travelling around to taste local preparations.
A renowned location is the town of Caldaro, and it’s not surprising to know that its official name is ‘Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino’, which literally means ‘Caldaro on the wine route’ in English. This route unwinds for about 40 km connecting 16 municipalities where the wine production is a historical and quality matter. Over 85% of the South Tyrol vineyards are found along this road. Caldaro is located just 14 km from Bolzano, and we strongly suggest you rent a bicycle to go there at a slow pace, enjoying the pleasant surroundings. There is plenty of short hikes in the area between Caldaro and Termeno with castles, ancient buildings, local restaurants and of course, wine giving you company. Once your taste buds are satisfied, you can end your day with a visit to the nearby Caldaro Lake.
