Periyar National Park, a gem of a wildlife and ecotourism destination in Kerala

Periyar National Park, located in the Western Ghats mountain range of Kerala, spread across the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta, is a wonderful wildlife getaway you need to experience. The park is named after the Periyar River, which flows through it.

As a national park, it was established in 1950, and in 1978, it was also declared a tiger reserve under the Project Tiger initiative launched by the Government of India. The park is an important tiger habitat in South India and is home to a significant population of tigers. In addition to tigers, the park is also home to other wildlife species like elephants, leopards, Indian bison, sambar deer, barking deer, and various species of birds and reptiles.


The park authorities have implemented several measures to protect the tigers and their habitat, such as anti-poaching patrols and habitat restoration initiatives. And mainly because of this, today, Periyar National Park is also known for its efforts in conservation and eco-tourism. The park has implemented sustainable tourism practices and works with local communities to promote conservation and protect the park's biodiversity.



Speaking of ecotourism, did you know that Periyar National Park is one of the few national parks in India where you can go on treks? It is also called a Green Walk, a guided trekking where you are accompanied by a trained tribal guide. A maximum of five people can go on this trek at a time. This is for the safety of both trekkers and the wildlife.


This trekking programme will let you spend some time observing birds, butterflies and other wildlife for three hours, inside the park! The nature trails inside the park are incredibly beautiful.



Periyar National Park is famous for its wildlife and is home to a variety of species, including elephants, tigers, leopards, sambar deer, barking deer, wild boar, and a variety of bird species. One of the main attractions of the park is the Periyar Lake, which was formed when a dam was built across the Periyar River. And where there is a lake, there is boating! So if you are done with your wildlife safari or nature walk, you can also go for a boat ride.
