A collection of caves located on the northeastern shore of Lake Thun near Interlaken, St Beatus Caves are a part of the local folklore. Legend has it that thousands of years ago, there lived a ferocious dragon in those caves that let no one near them. Meanwhile wandering Irish monk St Beatus chose the cave for hermitage and came face to face with the tyrant dragon. After an epic face-off, he drove it away to the depths of Lake Thun and made it human-friendly. Folklores apart, St. Beatus Caves are a marvellous work of nature that leads deep into the interior of the immense Niederhorn Massif. A pre-historic settlement as well as the cell of St Beatus can also be viewed in the caves. Take a cave tour that includes visiting stalactites and stalagmites crisscrossed by underground waterfalls.
