The city’s tryst with art and culture is not limited to paintings. Thanjavur is also home to one of the most impressive UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Great Living Chola Temples. This UNESCO site is made up of three magnificent temples, namely, Brihadeeswarar Temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple (70 km away from Brihadeeswarar) and Airavatesvara temple (40 km away from Brihadeeswarar).
These temples are some of the best examples of the Dravidian architecture, complete with towering vimanas, intricate carvings and religious statues. All these showcase the architectural prowess of the artisans of Thanjavur.
Temples and art aside, there is another side of Thanjavur that is unmatched and iconic. The city has long been a cradle of Carnatic music and Bharatnatyam dance form. Speaking of Carnatic music, the city has produced legendary musicians. One of the best known names is that of the great composer Tragaraja. When we talk about Indian classical music, Thanjavur stands out.
