Regarded as one of the seven sacred cities in the Hindu culture, Mathura is a sacred holy city blessed by the mystical birth of Lord Krishna many ages ago. Every day, the city welcomes a swarm of Krishna devotees including historic aficionados into its sanctified folds of splendid buildings, old temple structures and beautiful sights and unique smells that cover the entire stretch of this antique town.Flowing through the heart of the city’s splendour is the soothing River Yamuna bustling with innumerable temples and devout pilgrims immersed in devotional activities all around its 25 odd ghats that remain busy from dusk to dawn all through the day. Once a Buddhist centre housing 20 Buddhist monasteries, today all that remains are ancient artefacts and relics preserved in architectural museums. Even with a legacy as rich as Mathura, bruises of invasions and attacks by the Afghan and Mughal empire is evident all the way through the city’s glorious architecture and indispensable character.
Best time to visit the city are during the festivals of Krishna Janmashtami (August) and Holi (March), which are celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour. If you cannot stand the crowd, plan a trip to Mathura anytime during the year. Taking a dip in the swirl of Lord Krishna’s adventures and pastimes rippling all across this traditionally affluent is an experience beyond words.
