Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6 will launch officially on November 19. Yet millions of gamers are set to miss out on playing the highly anticipated title after launch day, as Rockstar Games plans to release it only on current-generation consoles, not on PCs. Apart from this, regional restrictions and online verification requirements could further limit access for more players.
The upcoming instalment in the Grand Theft Auto franchise arrives 13 years after the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2013. Although the game is expected to draw widespread interest when it launches, a significant portion of the global gaming community will not be able to access it immediately.
The primary reason is the absence of a PC version at launch. Rockstar Games has traditionally released its major titles on consoles first, with PC versions arriving later. The company has not announced a launch timeline for a GTA 6 PC port, and a PC version has not yet been officially confirmed. As things stand, gamers will need either a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X/S to play GTA 6 when it launches on November 19.
Why PC users and gamers in some countries won’t be able to play GTA 6 after launch
Similar regulations are emerging worldwide, so by the time GTA 6 launches, age-verification requirements could affect online access for millions of players. Access issues may also affect gamers in Russia. GTA 6’s official release in the country is unlikely, as the parent company of Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive, does not sell its games there.
There have also been reports that Russian authorities are looking at restrictions on the game. So even if the sales resume, it could still be hampered by regulatory hurdles in the region.
While Rockstar Games has not officially detailed an online component for GTA 6, many expect the company to introduce a multiplayer experience, building on the long-running success of GTA Online.
However, access to online features may not be straightforward in every country. New age-verification regulations in several regions could require players to confirm their age before accessing multiplayer services.
Australia is among the countries implementing such requirements. Under these rules, younger players who do not meet age requirements may be blocked from online access, while some users who choose not to complete the verification process could also face restrictions.
Similar regulations are emerging worldwide, so by the time GTA 6 launches, age-verification requirements could affect online access for millions of players.
But Rockstar’s launch strategy means that for now GTA 6 will only be available on day one for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S owners in supported markets, leaving many PC gamers and others in the lurch for wider access.
