LONDON: P Kashyap who shocked Tien Minh Nguyen of Vietnam to top Group D and advance to the pre-quarterfinals of men's singles badminton said on Tuesday he never expected a straight sets victory over the tenth seed.
Kashyap, world no. 21, played one his best matches to script an impressive 21-9, 21-14 win. "I was confident I could win but I never expected the score to be like that.
I could control the game very well and I was focused throughout. In the world championships at the same venue, I lost seven straight points from 20-15 to lose the match against him. I was very upset about it but today I got it right," Kashyap said.
"At 18-14 in the second game, my mind did go back to that old match. He is a dangerous customer but I was able to pull through. My first aim was to qualify from my group. Now that I have done it, I can look forward to the next match."
On his next match, against Sri Lanka's Niluka Karunaratne Kashyap said: "I think we both are at the same level. He has beaten (eighth seed) Tago so he must be in good form."
In mixed doubles,
Jwala Gutta and V Diju ended their disappointing campaign with their straight defeat. On Monday, the Indians lost 15-21, 15-21 to South Korea's YD Lee and Je Ha.
