The Toronto Maple Leafs struck first midway through the second period when Maccelli opened the scoring by redirecting a point shot past Connor Ingram, setting the tone for a tightly contested middle frame. Edmonton responded later in the period as Jake Walman blasted a point shot through traffic to even the score, briefly shifting momentum toward the home side.
On a defensive turnover behind the Oilers’ goal, Matthew Knies gave Toronto the lead just nine seconds after the tying goal. The quick goal further emphasized the opportunistic style of the Maple Leafs, who punished Edmonton for even the slightest mistake.
The Oilers, however, refused to back down, tying the game early in the third when Kasperi Kapanen finished a slick deke in the slot to tie the game at 2-2. However, that goal would prove to be the final highlight for the Oilers of the evening.
John Tavares tapped home a backdoor pass, giving the Maple Leafs a 3-2 lead. Just 31 seconds later, with the power play advantage cut to 5-on-4, Maccelli scored again—beating Ingram with a quick shot that opened up the game at 4-2.
For the Oilers, the loss closes out an up-and-down eight-game homestand and reveals that there are still problems on the blue line. Even with flashes of brilliance, the Oilers continue to have trouble shutting down their opponents when the game becomes a tight contest, especially on special teams. Toronto, on the other hand, heads into the break with confidence and key road wins under its belt.
