Matvei Michkov, Trevor Zegras deliver crushing blow to Toronto Maple Leafs in Philadelphia Flyers' stunning 3-2 game
The Philadelphia Flyers have made it their mission to win games, and they have done just that, recording their third win in a row Monday night. The Flyers edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 in a shootout thriller. The Toronto Maple Leafs have slumped to their fourth loss in a row, and it was a hard pill to swallow for the team.
Matvei Michkov and Trevor Zegras of the Philadelphia Flyers sealed the win in the final round of the shootout. The Maple Leafs' star player, William Nylander, scored in the first round of the shootout for Toronto. Still, the team was unable to capitalize in the next two rounds, with the team's star player, Auston Matthews, and veteran player Max Domi failing to record a single goal in the shootout.
In the game, Toronto struck first at 15:22 of the first period with a goal from Dakota Joshua, who netted a pass from Matias Maccelli. This was Joshua's first goal since he returned after a two-month absence due to a lacerated kidney. However, the Flyers struck back three minutes later with a goal from Christian Dvorak, who netted a rebound on the power play to tie the game at 1.
Despite having 31 shots on goal compared to the Flyers’ 25, Toronto was unable to beat Flyers goalie Dan Vladar, who made 29 saves. In contrast, Anthony Stolarz made 23 saves, but he was unable to withstand the pressure. Philadelphia was on the verge of ending the game when defenseman Jamie Drysdale hit the outside of the post with 30 seconds remaining in overtime.
Auston Matthews’ goal drought compounds the Maple Leafs’ woes, as the star center has not found the back of the net in eight games, the longest drought of the year, after returning from international competition following a gold medal run with Team USA in Italy. Leading scorer Travis Konecny was out with a lower-body injury for the game against the Flyers.
As the playoffs approach, the Flyers are on the upswing, while the Maple Leafs are feeling the heat to turn their game around before the skid gets any deeper.
