At NFL Honors in San Francisco, the Washington Commanders LB was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, the league’s highest honor for leadership and service beyond football.

Who is Bobby Wagner?

Bobby Wagner is one of the most celebrated LBs of his time. Born on June 27, 1990, in L.A., he played college football at Utah State before the Seattle Seahawks selected him in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He stepped into the league fast and never slowed down.

Over 14 NFL seasons, the star has built a resume that screams consistency. He is a 10-time Pro Bowl selection and an 11-time All-Pro, including six first-team honors. He won Super Bowl XLVIII with Seattle and has recorded at least 100 tackles in every season of his career. Through the season, he leads all active NFL players in total tackles.

Wagner spent 11 seasons with the Seahawks, played one season with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, returned briefly to Seattle in 2023, and joined Washington in 2024. Even at 35, he remains a tone-setter in the middle of the defense.

The award announcement came Thursday night at the Palace of Fine Arts during the 2026 NFL Honors ceremony. He has won awards for his community work. Wagner used the moment to honor the person who shaped everything he does away from football.

His mother, Phenia Mae Wagner, died from stroke complications in 2012, months before he was drafted. During his acceptance speech, LB explained the impact. “She’s the reason why I’m standing up here,” he said at the NFL Honors. “She believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.”

That loss led Wagner to create the FAST54 Phenia Mae Fund, which focuses on stroke education, awareness, and patient support. The fund partners with Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, Cedars-Sinai, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and Kaiser Permanente. In 2025, Wagner expanded the effort to include pediatric stroke research and care at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C.

His work does not stop there. The popular linebacker is also involved in the NFL’s Inspire Change initiative, backing social justice reform and mental health awareness. Not only that, but he also runs the Tackle Everything Tech Tour, an initiative that introduces students in needy communities to technology, entrepreneurship, and career pathways. He completed his third tour in Washington, D.C., in 2025.

Wagner’s play has remained strong alongside his community work. During the 2025 NFL season, he finished with 162 tackles for the Commanders, ranking among the league leaders.
