Why did NBA fine Luguentz Dort and Jeremiah Fears? Exploring reasons behind heated Oklahoma City Thunder vs New Orleans Pelicans on-court clash
The NBA has punished the two players at the centre of an on-court confrontation earlier this week. The NBA said on Thursday that Jeremiah Fears of the New Orleans Pelicans and Luguentz Dort of the Oklahoma City Thunder were each fined $25,000 for their involvement in the scrum.
The incident happened when Luguentz Dort wrapped up Fears after a rebound during the Thunder's 104-95 victory on Tuesday. Dort shoved Fears in the chest after the allotted time had passed, and the two players then violently seized each other's shirts.
The NBA said on Thursday that guard Jeremiah Fears of the New Orleans Pelicans has been fined $25,000 for his involvement in an on-court brawl against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“Oklahoma City Thunder guard Luguentz Dort and New Orleans Pelicans guard Jeremiah Fears have each been fined $25,000 for their roles in an on-court altercation, it was announced today by James Jones, Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations..”
It continued:
“At the conclusion of the Thunder’s 104–95 victory over the Pelicans on Jan. 27 at Paycom Center, Dort wrapped up Fears after Fears secured a rebound. After time expired, Dort shoved Fears in the chest, and both players subsequently grabbed each other’s jerseys in an aggressive manner…”
Dort and Fears shoved each other and grabbed each other's jerseys before teammates intervened to separate them. The two squads eventually parted ways and headed to their own changing rooms at the Paycom Center. Fears allegedly referred to Dort as "soft" on Instagram, but the Thunder later played down the incident.
In the closing minutes of the game, the two teams engaged in numerous scrums, of which this one was just one. Following that, Thunder player Jaylin Williams, who participated in a separate scrum with Pelicans wing Saddiq Bey, stated that the intense feelings were simply a result of both teams' fierce rivalry.
According to a video posted by Andrew Schlecht of The Athletic, Williams stated the following about the events at the conclusion of the game:
"I saw two teams that are competing against each other… You play a game and guys are bumping, you're fouling, you're doing things like that. ... It's two teams that wanna compete at the highest level. Of course, tempers are gonna get high. That's all it is, just two teams that wanna play. Play hard and it gets to that ... and outside of it, it's nothing more than what it was on the court."
Following the game, Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault cited officiating as a major factor, claiming that improper handling of previous instances caused the situation to worsen.
Dort, 26, averaged 8.8 points and 3.9 rebounds in 38 games (all starts) this season, his seventh with the Thunder. He finished the game with 12 points and eight rebounds. Fears, who averaged 13.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, three assists, and 1.2 steals while shooting 31.8% from three-point range, was one of ten rookies chosen for the Rising Stars Game.
He is one of four rookies with at least nine 20-point games and ranks fifth in rookie scoring. The seventh overall pick earlier this season became the fourth-youngest player in history to post three consecutive 20-point outings, following Cooper Flagg, Kevin Durant and LeBron James (19 years, 51 days). It was the third-longest run by a rookie for the Pelicans.
