PVL Season 3: Video analysis has played huge role in turnaround, says Chennai Blitz coach Dakshinamoorthy

CHENNAI: Chennai Blitz head coach S Dakshinamoorthy said that video analysis has acted as a catalyst in the team’s turnaround in the ongoing Prime Volleyball League Season 3.

After going down (0-3) to defending champions Ahmedabad Defenders in the tournament opener here, Chennai notched up three successive victories – against Hyderabad Black Hawks (3-0), Kochi Blue Spikers (3-0) and Kolkata Thunderbolts (3-2) – to stay on course for a spot in the Super 5s stage. “It (video analysis) has played a huge role. It is very important in modern volleyball,” Dakshinamoorthy told TOI.

“We could not do a lot of video analysis ahead of the match against Ahmedabad. We did not have many videos to watch since it was the first match of the season. After that, we collected a lot of data and analyzed the teams. We showed the videos to our players and guided them on how to tackle different situations,” Dakshinamoorthy added.

Dakshinamoorthy, who traded Ahmedabad’s white for Chennai’s yellow ahead of the season, also said that the majority of the players took time before getting into the groove.

“Our foreign players (Leandro Mejia and Douglas Bueno) are new to the league and we have youngsters who do not have great experience. They had wilted under pressure in the first match. We needed time to make them understand the format,” added the veteran coach.

“After that match, we taught lessons on how to handle pressure and adapt to the format. We immediately addressed our weaknesses in training. Now, there is good team bonding; even when we are behind in a set or match, the players are staying calm and handling the situations well. That is one of the advantages we have. Winning the hard-fought match against Kolkata has given the team a lot of confidence.”

While Dakshinamoorthy is currently on Prime Volleyball duty, he had one eye on the Khelo India University Games in Guwahati. The SRM Institute of Science and Technology, where Dakshinamoorthy is employed, clinched silver in men’s volleyball to maintain their record of having won a medal in every edition of the Games.

“Seven of our members are playing in the PVL, so we did not have a full-strength squad. For me, winning silver is an achievement,” said Dakshinamoorthy.
