MANGALORE: This 31-year-old high jumper, who is a native of Ullal, situated 15 kilometers away from the city despite of financial problems during here college days is representing India in London Olympics. Sahana Kumari, who recently qualified for Olympics by clearing 1.92 meters in the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships visited Mangalore on Sunday morning.
Sahana told TOI that though undivided Daksina Kannada district has many good athletes they are lagging behind to build their career in sports because there is not a even single good stadium and synthetic track in Mangalore.
Compared to athletes of Karnataka athletes, other states athletes are getting good facilities, she said and added that Indian athletes are not performing well in international competitions because sports camps for practicing has not been organized in India properly. "Foreign athletes always win medals in Olympics because they do long term preparations and they are getting good facilities to practice," Sahana said.
