New York Yankees claim 23-year-old former No. 3 prospect Yanquiel Fernandez from Rockies
In another of what they regularly call a "depth move," the New York Yankees have claimed outfielder Yanquiel Fernández off waivers from the Colorado Rockies. Colorado designated the 23-year-old former top prospect for assignment last week among a slew of offseason roster moves. Fernández, who as a young hitter in the Rockies system was once viewed among the best, will get a fresh start with one of baseball's most storied franchises.
For the Yankees, it is a low-risk chance to sign a player with a very clear ceiling. Fernández has exhibited promising big-league power potential during his minor league career but has not yet proven, on a consistent basis, that he can hit at the Major League level. This move prompted New York to designate right-handed pitcher Dom Hamel for assignment in order to free up a spot on the 40-man roster, which is a good indicator that the club sees some upside in the young outfielder, and that he's worth a second look.
When he did finally reach the majors with the Rockies in 2025, he struggled in 52 games at the highest level. Fernández hit .225 with 4 homers and 11 RBIs, but in terms of strikeouts and in general, was in trouble at the plate. With flashes but no consistency, Colorado had to cut bait as they rebuilt their roster around a more complementary core, giving the Yankees the opportunity to pounce.
That said, Fernández is exactly the type of player the Yankees target, and truthfully is right up most Major League front offices' alley. He could make his way into the Major League picture if he can adjust and limit strikeouts.

Yanquiel Fernández brings intriguing upside to New York
Originally signed by the Rockies as an international free agent out of Cuba in 2019, Fernández quickly earned a reputation as a toolsy left-handed power bat. He compiled an excellent résumé over five MLB seasons, hitting. in 469 games with 77 home runs and 338 RBIs while batting.279 With a combination of strength, bat speed, and arm talent, he was one of Colorado’s most highly rated prospects, peaking as the organization’s No. 3 overall prospect. When he did finally reach the majors with the Rockies in 2025, he struggled in 52 games at the highest level. What the move means for the Yankees’ roster plans
For New York, it's a classic depth move with upside. The Yankees already have a big-league outfield mix, and the soon-to-be 21-year-old slugger will likely spend most of next season in the minors. There, he can polish his approach and continue developing as a well-rounded offensive player. That said, Fernández is exactly the type of player the Yankees target, and truthfully is right up most Major League front offices' alley.
