World Environment Day: How Formula E is a frontrunner in sustainability
It’s been more than a dozen years since Formula E stepped into the world and showed that motorsport can be sustainable while being entertaining and thrilling. While it has come a long way and is showing the world its growth by introducing the amazing new GEN4, there are many more initiatives that have been consistently carried out throughout the season, in and around race venues, and beyond.
Better Futures FundFormula E picks local organisations working towards bringing about positive change in the city hosting a particular race weekend and invests in them directly to do its bit. Through the Better Futures Fund, Formula E is giving 25,000 euros to a local organisation in every host city this season.
Driving Force initiativeFormula E’s major initiative, Driving Force, presented by PIF E360, reaches out to children aged 8-12. The sustainability education programme combines digital learning resources, teacher lesson plans, school workshops and race-week activations to make sustainability and STEM careers accessible, engaging and relevant. It has reached around 70,000 students so far.
B CorpFormula E became the world's first B Corp-certified sport this year. The certification reflects Formula E's core values of sustainability, including the environmental standards followed across race events, community investment programmes, worker wellbeing practices, and a commitment to transparency and accountability.
BSI’s Net Zero PathwayFormula E became the first sport in the world to be certified to BSI’s Net Zero Pathway. It also has a verified carbon footprint and a management system aligned with the ISO Net Zero Guidelines, the globally recognised framework for Net Zero strategies.
Formula E is also well ahead in complying with the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), ensuring sponsors, teams, partners and fans are able to trust the credibility of its climate and sustainability claims.
Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sport (GSBS)Last year, Formula E topped the Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sport (GSBS) for the fourth consecutive year. It continues to remain the world's most sustainable sport. The independent CESG assessment ranked Formula E first overall while also leading the Environmental and Social categories. Among 78 organisations assessed across 11 countries, Formula E achieved a score of 85/100, outperforming the sports average by almost 30 points.

Formula E initiatives making a difference in the world of sustainability
The GEN4 carThe Formula E GEN4 car has raised expectations for Season 13, as the car will officially join the competition in December. With a peak output of 600kW (815bhp), the GEN4 is designed to be 100% recyclable or reusable. Its tyres are also made of 65% renewable and recycled materials, and the battery has no rare earth minerals. Despite such measures, it is 30 percent faster than a Formula 1 car.Better Futures FundFormula E picks local organisations working towards bringing about positive change in the city hosting a particular race weekend and invests in them directly to do its bit.
