Shillong were quick off the blocks. Striker Matthew Mayora's pass found John Menyongar but his half hearted push was cleared by Mumbai defender Faizal Rehman. Although Shillong were the more creative of the two sides, it was Mumbai who drew first blood.
Nigerian striker Gbeneme Friday tapped home a cross from Ebi Sukore in the 25th minute. Mumbai's second goal came in the second half courtesy Sukore. The Nigerian was brought down in the box by Shillong keeper Lalthuammawia Ralte.
With a cool head, Sukore slotted home the penalty in the 63rd minute. To make matters worse, the Shillong custodian was shown a yellow card, the first of the night, for his tackle on the Nigerian striker.
Shillong pulled one back late into the game through Subhash Singh in the 87th minute but the writing was already on the wall.
