Ravichandran Ashwin could soon make history as the first high-profile Indian cricketer to feature in the Big Bash League. If all goes to plan, the 38-year-old off-spinner may turn out in Australia’s premier T20 competition as early as this season. Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg has already opened talks with Ashwin. The approach came soon after Ashwin announced his retirement from the IPL last week. The veteran had spoken about becoming an “explorer of the game across various leagues,” and the BBL now looks like the first stop on that journey.

While the details are still being worked out, Greenberg told Cricbuzz that he was excited by the possibility. “To get someone with Ashwin’s credentials to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels. He’s a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash and to our cricket summer,” he said. Ashwin also confirmed to Cricbuzz that CA had reached out to him. There are still hurdles to clear, especially with BBL clubs having already spent most of their salary purse. But CA is exploring solutions, including customised contracts and sponsorship-backed deals, to make Ashwin’s signing possible. If it happens, Melbourne is seen as a likely destination.
For the league, this could be a game-changer. The BBL has often struggled to attract the biggest overseas stars, but the arrival of a World Cup winner and IPL great would instantly raise its profile. Ashwin’s massive following would also give the competition fresh exposure in South Asia and beyond.

Do you think Ravichandran Ashwin will successfully join the Big Bash League this season?
Interestingly, Ashwin has also spoken to Greenberg about his interest in coaching and hinted that he could use opportunities like the BBL to sharpen his skills off the field too. His growing media presence, including his popular vodcasts, means he may also find space in broadcasting roles. For now, the cricket world waits to see if Ashwin takes the leap. If he does, the move could open doors for other Indian stars to consider life in overseas leagues once their IPL days are over.
