IND vs ENG Highlights, 4th Test Match Day 4: Shubman Gill, KL Rahul power India to 174/2 at stumps

India vs England Highlights, 4th Test Match Day 4: India’s captain Shubman Gill delivered an outstanding rearguard effort to prevent England from securing a series-clinching win in the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Saturday, following a long-anticipated century by England’s skipper Ben Stokes.

Gill’s resilience was evident from the start, as India faced a precarious position at 0/2 after Chris Woakes struck with two successive balls in the first over of India’s second innings, dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan for ducks in the slips.

Trailing by over 300 runs after England’s formidable first innings total of 669, highlighted by Stokes’ superb 141, India staged a dramatic fightback. Through a series of twists, they closed the fourth day at 174-2, with KL Rahul on 87 not out and Gill on 78 not out, leaving them 137 runs behind. While still in deficit, India has renewed hope of achieving a remarkable draw, as England, already leading 2-1 in the series, posted their fifth-highest Test score ever.

This innings marked a return to form for Gill, who started his first series as India’s captain with three centuries in four innings but had scored just 34 runs in his last three innings prior to this game.

Ben Stokes did not bowl on Saturday—a concerning sign for England given his recent history of hamstring issues—despite his outstanding performance in the first innings, where he took 5-72. His century in this match made him only the fourth England player to take five wickets and score a century in the same Test, joining Tony Greig, Ian Botham (who did it five times), and Gus Atkinson, now sidelined.

Initially, it seemed as if England might not need to bowl at all on Saturday. Gill narrowly avoided a hat-trick from Woakes, and after lunch, he survived a contentious lbw appeal from Jofra Archer—who was convinced he had struck pad, not bat—only for the review to be inconclusive, upholding the not-out decision.

Gill, who had scored two runs when Archer appealed, was then struck on the pad again, but this appeal was rejected, much to Archer’s disbelief. The 25-year-old responded with aggressive boundaries— a cut and a straight drive—off Woakes in quick succession. He also narrowly escaped dismissal for 46 when a thick edge off Brydon Carse went high to point, but Liam Dawson dropped the catch.

Gill reached a 77-ball fifty after a quick single off part-time spinner Joe Root. KL Rahul soon joined him, reaching 50 in 141 balls, as India mounted a staunch resistance with sound defensive play, though Rahul displayed attacking intent at times, responding to England’s wayward deliveries with elegant shots.

England resumed at 544-7, following Joe Root’s historic 150, which made him the second-highest run-scorer in Test history. Stokes, who was 77 not out overnight and briefly left the field with cramp, intensified the pressure with his aggressive batting.

He brought up his century with a leg-glance four off Jasprit Bumrah after 164 balls—a celebration marked by fist-raising, eye-gazing, and a finger gesture in honor of his late father Ged. This was Stokes’s first Test century in over two years, his 14th in 115 matches, and he celebrated passionately.

Stokes then continued his assault, launching Washington Sundar for a six and reverse sweeping the next ball for four. He also launched Ravindra Jadeja for another six, but on his next ball, he holed out to left-arm spinner Jadeja, with England ending their innings at 658-9, holding a lead of exactly 300 runs.

Stokes hooks a short ball through square leg for a single. It extends England's lead to 200 runs and is that the psychological figure to put this game beyond India's reach? Next ball, FOUR! Short from Siraj once again, Dawson rocks back in his crease and pulls it towards backward square leg. Fielders try and cut it out but fail to do so

IND vs ENG Live Score: PITCH REPORT
If you look at the pitch, yesterday there was variable bounce.

The sun was out and you can see cracks. It will settle down a bit after the new ball phase but the rough will be a concern.

India have five left handers and Liam Dawson will be wanting to hit those spots. It's overcast, the ball is expected to move a bit more. If India see off the new ball, the wicket could get slower and slower

IND vs ENG Live Score: Batting today is 'way easier' - KP after Root's record-breaking knock vs India

England batting legend Kevin Pietersen has ignited fresh debate in cricketing circles by claiming that batting today is significantly easier than it was two to three decades ago. According to Pietersen, a noticeable dip in the quality of bowling across Test-playing nations has made life simpler for modern-day batters.

His remarks came just a day after Joe Root surpassed Australia’s Ricky Ponting to move into second place on the all-time list of Test run scorers, behind only Sachin Tendulkar. Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Pietersen wrote:

"Don’t shout at me but batting these days is way easier than 20/25 years ago! Probably twice as hard back then!”

Known for his bold personality both on and off the field, Pietersen—who played 104 Tests for England between 2005 and 2013 and scored 8,181 runs at an average of 47.28—has never shied away from expressing strong views. This time, he doubled down on the argument by pointing to a star-studded list of bowlers from the past, arguing that the modern game lacks comparable threats.

“Waqar, Shoaib, Akram, Mushtaq, Kumble, Srinath, Harbhajan, Donald, Pollock, Klusener, Gough, McGrath, Lee, Warne, Gillespie, Bond, Vettori, Cairns, Vaas, Murali, Curtley, Courtney and the list could go on and on…” he wrote, before challenging his followers:

“I’ve named 22 above. Please name me 10 modern day bowlers that can compare to the names above?”

Pietersen’s comments come at a time when batting records continue to tumble. Root’s unbeaten 150 against India on Day 3 of the fourth Test in Manchester has now taken his career tally to 11,736 Test runs—closing in on Tendulkar’s monumental 15,921.

While many have applauded the consistency and flair of batters in the current era, Pietersen's comments have reopened the discussion on how much the evolution of flat pitches, changed rules, and fading bowling firepower have contributed to inflated batting numbers.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Ponting expects stubborn fight from India
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes India will put up a determined fight over the final two days of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, despite finding themselves in a tough spot. With England finishing Day 3 on a commanding 544/7 and leading by 186 runs, India face a daunting task to stay alive in the series. However, Ponting feels the worn-out Manchester pitch could offer India a fighting chance.

While assessing the match situation, Ponting described England as "red-hot favourites" but refused to write off the visitors, citing their familiarity with deteriorating surfaces.

"I thought England were red-hot favourites this morning if the first session went well, and the whole day has gone just about perfectly. But, what I would say, is that India are used to playing on wearing pitches with variable bounce and a bit of turn. I wouldn't rule out them being hard to dismiss in the second innings," Ponting said on Sky Sports.

England batter Ollie Pope, who made a composed 71 off 128 balls before falling to Washington Sundar, offered insights into the pitch conditions. He was surprised to see significant turn on Day 3—a rarity in English conditions—and expects batting to become increasingly difficult.

"It is pretty clear there is some turn out there and a few balls are shooting [through low]. It is not what we expect in England on a day-three pitch. We are well aware when we come to bat again that it is going to be tough work, so hopefully we can make early inroads when we bowl," Pope said.

England had a dominant Day 3, fuelled by Joe Root’s record-breaking 150. After his departure, skipper Ben Stokes took charge and remained unbeaten on 77 at stumps, with Liam Dawson steady at the other end on 22*. The final result could hinge on how many more runs England can add before handing the ball over to their bowlers for what promises to be a gripping phase of the Test.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Manjrekar decodes India's shambolic outing in Manchester
Former cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Shubman Gill, who is carrying "immense responsibility," has been thrown into the deep end in his first captaincy stint in England.

India entered the series without batting stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, aiming for a historic series win on English soil — a feat they haven't achieved since 2007.

From Leeds to London, the visitors fought valiantly but now find themselves trailing 2-1 in the five-match series. The fourth Test has marked a clear departure from the closely contested nature of the first three matches, with India appearing overwhelmed as England takes charge.

Manjrekar broke down the factors behind India’s struggles at Old Trafford. Injuries to Akash Deep and Nitish Kumar Reddy forced India to make changes to their XI, including a sudden debut for Anshul Kamboj — who has since found it difficult to cope with the demands of Test cricket.

"Shubman Gill is on his first trip to England as a batter and has also been thrown into the deep end as captain, carrying immense responsibility. He fought well across the first three Tests, but this game feels slightly beyond India, considering the challenges and resources. India's bowling was hampered by Akash Deep's unavailability -- he picked up 10 wickets in the last Test but missed out due to injury. Anshul Kamboj came in, but struggled to rise to the demands of Test cricket," Manjrekar said on JioHotstar.

Manjrekar also stressed that India continues to treat spin as an afterthought. While the pace attack of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kamboj, and Shardul Thakur bowled a combined 83 overs for just three wickets, the spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar claimed four wickets in 52 overs.

"One area India could've improved is their bowling combination, seamers bowled nearly 82 overs for just three wickets, while spin got four wickets in just 52 overs. That's something they'll need to reassess. The standout, though, was Mohammed Siraj -- it was great to see him bowl with such heart right till the end," he added.

At stumps on Day 3, England were firmly in control, reaching 544/7 in response to India’s 387, holding a commanding lead of 186 runs. With captain Ben Stokes still at the crease, the hosts will be eyeing a big total to potentially seal the series with a 3-1 lead.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Kaif gives example of Virat and Rohit
"Pehle Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin nahi hain. Ab shayad Bumrah ke bina bhi – jo humare Hindustani fans hain – unhe aadat dalni padegi. Bhai, mujhe lagta hai ki aapko unke bina Test match dekhne ki aadat daalni hogi. [First, there’s no Virat Kohli, no Rohit Sharma, no R Ashwin. And now, perhaps Indian fans will have to prepare themselves for Test cricket without Bumrah too. I genuinely feel that you may need to get used to watching Test matches without him.]"

"Dua karta hoon jo main keh raha hoon, meri prediction galat ho. Par jo maine is Test match mein dekha – mujhe laga ki woh enjoy nahi kar rahe hain. Bilkul bhi enjoy nahi kar rahe. Woh shareer se haare hue hain. Zehan bilkul tez hai, jazba wahi hai – par shareer saath nahi de raha hai. Toh phir aap kya kar sakte ho? [I hope and pray that I’m wrong, and this prediction doesn’t come true. But from what I’ve seen in this Test, he doesn’t look like he’s enjoying it anymore. Not at all. He’s physically defeated. His mind is still sharp, his passion remains, but his body isn’t keeping up. So what can you really do?]" he said.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Kaif opens up on Bumrah
"Par mujhe lagta hai ki wohi hai – shiddat, desh ke liye khelne ki chahat. Par unka shareer unka saath nahi de raha. Fitness ke maamle mein woh har chuke hain. Is Test match mein unka na chalna saaf taur par yeh sabit karta hai ki aage dikkat aayegi, aur ho sakta hai Test matches mein aap unhe na dekhein. [But now, the intensity and desire to play for the country are still there, yet the body isn’t supporting him. He’s lost the battle with his fitness. His performance in this Test match clearly shows that challenges lie ahead, and maybe you won’t see him in Tests anymore.]"

IND vs ENG Live Score: Kaif on Bumrah
"Par jo raftaar thi – 130, 125 ki speed se ball daal rahe hain. Aur jo wicket mili – ek aage ka catch jo keeper ne liya tha – woh bhi aage dive maar kar pakda. Fit Bumrah bhai yahaan out karte hain, yahaan par keeper catch pakadta hai, itni raftaar se ball jaati hai ke batsman ko hawa bhi nahi lagti – chaahe Joe Root ho ya koi bhi. Aise bowler jab chahein batsman ko out kar sakte hain. [But the pace he once had – now he’s bowling at 130, 125 km/h. Even the wicket he got – the catch that was taken by the keeper diving forward – that wasn’t the Bumrah we know. A fully fit Bumrah dismisses the batter outright – the keeper just finishes the job. His pace used to be such that batters like Joe Root didn’t even feel the air of the ball before they were out. Bowlers like him could dismiss anyone whenever they wanted.]"

IND vs ENG Live Score: Kaif's statement on Bumrah
"Jasprit Bumrah. Mujhe lagta hai ki aane wale Test matches mein aapko unhe khelte hue na dikhein, aur ho sakta hai woh retirement bhi le lein. Shareer se woh joojh rahe hain, dheemi ball daal rahe hain, raftaar dikhi nahi is Test match mein, aur woh khuddar bante ja rahe hain. Agar unhe lagega ki main 100% nahi de pa raha hoon, desh ke liye, main jeeta nahi paa raha, wickets nahi le paa raha hoon, toh woh khud hi mana kar denge – aisi meri feeling hai. Aur agar samay na mila, woh alag baat hai. [I feel that in the upcoming Test matches, you may not see him play, and perhaps, he might even retire. He’s struggling physically, bowling slower deliveries, and his pace hasn’t been visible in this Test match. He seems to be becoming more self-aware and principled. If he feels he can’t give 100% for the country, that he’s no longer winning games or taking wickets, I believe he’ll step away on his own. That’s my gut feeling. And if he doesn’t get time to recover, that’s another issue]," Kaif said on his social media handle while posting a video.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Shocking! Jasprit Bumrah to quit Test cricket?
Former India batter Mohammad Kaif sparked debate with a bold statement, suggesting that Jasprit Bumrah may soon walk away from Test cricket. Kaif questioned whether the star pacer can continue in the demanding format, pointing to signs of physical struggle and a noticeable dip in intensity.

In the ongoing Test at Old Trafford, Bumrah has picked up just one wicket across two days of play.

His pace has also raised eyebrows — he’s breached the 140 kmph mark only once so far in the match. To make matters worse, he reportedly sustained a minor injury while walking down the stairs at the venue.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Trott weighs in on Bumrah's struggles
Former England batter Jonathan Trott believes Jasprit Bumrah has been “unlucky” against England in the fourth Test at Manchester, and that a lack of support from the other end has only added to the Indian pacer's struggle.

Despite bowling with his trademark intensity and looking threatening with the Dukes ball, Bumrah couldn’t dislodge any of England’s top five batters early on. He had to work hard for his first wicket, eventually dismissing debutant Jamie Smith after 28 overs of toil.

The absence of pressure from the other end made Bumrah’s task even more challenging. During the early part of England’s innings, he managed to keep Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett in check, but debutant Anshul Kamboj conceded several boundaries down the leg side, releasing the pressure.

“Bumrah's areas were pretty good, and his economy reflects that; he was just a bit unlucky. But the bigger issue is pressure from both ends. Bumrah benefits massively when there's support at the other end, and that wasn't the case today. When you're slightly under par as a bowling unit, like India were, control from both ends becomes crucial,” Trott said while speaking to JioHotstar.

Trott also suggested a tactical shift that could help Bumrah thrive — pairing him with spin from the opposite end.

“I'd have liked to see Bumrah bowl in tandem with spin from the other end, either Washington or Kuldeep, to build pressure. But with runs constantly leaking from the opposite side, England's batters didn't feel the kind of pressure we've seen Bumrah create in the past,” he added.

By the end of Day 3, England were in a commanding position at 544/7, holding a lead of 186 runs. With two days of play remaining, the match seemed to be slipping away from India, with a draw or loss appearing the likeliest result.

Despite the tough situation, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes India will still look to push for a win.

“India won't be thinking of a draw, they'll be hoping for the sun to be out so they can pile on runs and put pressure back on England. The surface is showing signs of uneven bounce, so it could get tricky for some bowlers. Chris Woakes may not be as effective, but Ben Stokes will still need to bowl a lot of overs,” he said.

“Jofra Archer's tall action and ability to target the stumps could prove dangerous, especially if the ball stays low. And watch out for Liam Dawson, not necessarily for unplayable deliveries, but he'll play a crucial role in England's bowling strategy,” he added.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Joe Root surpasses Ricky Ponting
Prolific England batter Joe Root on Friday overtook Australian legend Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in the history of Test cricket. Root now has only one name ahead of him on the all-time list — Indian great Sachin Tendulkar, who continues to hold the top spot.

On Day 3 of the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford, Root first went past the career aggregates of Indian legend Rahul Dravid and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis within a span of eight balls. He then surpassed Ponting by steering a delivery behind point for a single, receiving a standing ovation from the Manchester crowd.

Ponting had amassed 13,378 runs in 168 Tests at an average of 51.85. Tendulkar still leads the tally with 15,921 runs.

Fittingly, Ponting was in the commentary box when Root went past his total. The 34-year-old Root made his Test debut in 2012 during England’s tour of India, scoring 73 runs in his maiden innings at Nagpur.

“Congrats, Joe Root. Magnificent,” a pleased Ponting said while on-air with Ravi Shastri, applauding the Yorkshireman.

Root is currently playing his 157th Test.

It was a special moment at Old Trafford, as England captain Ben Stokes, who was at the crease with Root, raised his bat even before Root had a chance to remove his helmet and acknowledge the applause from the crowd and his teammates.

Earlier in the match, Root etched his name into the record books by scoring his 12th Test century against India — the most by any batter against them. He has faced India in 34 Tests so far.

He had equalled Australian Steve Smith’s tally of 11 centuries against India in the previous Test at Lord’s, where he scored 104 runs off 199 deliveries in the first innings.

The century at Old Trafford was Root’s 38th overall in Test cricket, taking him level with Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara in fourth place on the list of most Test hundreds.

Only Tendulkar (51), Kallis (45), and Ponting (41) have more centuries than Root in the longest format of the game.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Weather updates
As Day 4 of the crucial India vs England fourth Test begins at Old Trafford on Saturday, weather has once again emerged as a major talking point — particularly from India’s perspective, as they look to claw their way back into the series.

After a bright and sunny Day 3, clouds gathered ominously over Manchester on Friday evening. TimesofIndia.com’s senior reporter Sahil Malhotra reported from the ground.

“In not very pleasant news for the Indian cricket team, chilly winds and dark clouds have taken over Manchester after day three. The forecast doesn't look very, very good for day four and day five. Day four at least could be India’s day to bat, and India did find it very difficult when they batted under clouds on the opening day.”

“If India get to bat on Day 4, the forecast is there for rain. Dark clouds have taken over, chilly winds have taken over, and this could get tricky for the Indian team who are already playing catch-up in this Test.”

According to the UK Met Office forecast for Manchester, the day is expected to begin with light rain, turning to overcast conditions by late morning. Temperatures will range between 16°C and 20°C. There is a 50–60% chance of rain in the morning session, but things could improve later with chances of showers reducing to 40% by tea and 30% by stumps.

India, trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, also face the mental hurdle of never having won a Test match at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, England are firmly in control, having ended Day 3 at 544/7 with Joe Root’s masterful 150 pushing them 186 runs ahead. Ben Stokes remains unbeaten on 77 as the hosts look to seal the series.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Pope fifty!
Pope reached his 16th Test fifty off 93 balls, while Root overtook Dravid and Kallis in the Test run charts once he moved past 31. India introduced off-spinning all-rounder Washington Sundar in the 69th over, and Root soon brought up his 104th fifty-plus Test score off 99 balls before lunch.

Post-lunch, Sundar struck immediately as Pope, attempting to work him through the leg side, edged behind to KL Rahul at slip. India’s decision to hold off on taking the second new ball paid off again when Sundar’s flighted delivery deceived Harry Brook, who was stumped for just 3 by substitute wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel.

With Root and Stokes continuing to find the boundary at regular intervals, England moved into the lead. After spending 18 tense deliveries in the 90s, Root finally reached his 12th Test century against India—his second of the series—with a flick off debutant Anshul Kamboj in the 96th over.

The crowd erupted, chanting "ROOOOT" around Old Trafford, and they were on their feet again five overs later when Root nudged a single behind point to go past Ricky Ponting and become the second-highest scorer in Test history, just before the tea break.

The final session saw Bumrah return to the attack, but the pace spearhead lacked his usual rhythm. Root continued to dominate, driving Shardul Thakur past mid-on for four, while Stokes dispatched Bumrah through cover with authority.

Stokes brought up his 36th Test half-century and followed it with some flair—reverse sweeping Jadeja for four and pulling Sundar to the boundary. However, he began feeling discomfort in his left calf during the 115th over and retired hurt on 66 (off 116 balls) after the 116th over. The ECB later confirmed it was due to cramps.

Root reached yet another milestone—his 16th 150-plus Test score—but his brilliant knock ended on exactly 150 when Jadeja got one to spin and bounce past the outside edge, with Jurel completing a sharp stumping.

Bumrah struck immediately with the new ball, removing debutant Jamie Smith with a delivery that nipped away and caught the edge, giving Jurel his second dismissal of the day and marking Bumrah’s 50th Test wicket in England.

Siraj soon joined the wicket-takers list, bowling Chris Woakes with a delivery that stayed low and took the inside edge. Stokes, returning after treatment, ensured no further damage alongside Dawson as England closed out a dominant day of Test cricket.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Hello and welcome!
Hello and welcome to the Live coverage of Day 4 of the fourth Test match between India and England at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Joe Root produced a masterclass with the bat, scoring a sublime 150 and becoming the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket, while Ben Stokes battled cramps to remain unbeaten on 77. The duo played pivotal roles in giving England a commanding 186-run lead over India on Day 3 of the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Old Trafford on Friday.

England resumed the day on 225/2 and piled on 319 runs for the loss of five wickets, finishing on 544/7. But the day undoubtedly belonged to Root, who combined surgical precision with artistic calm to notch up his 38th Test century and leapfrog Jacques Kallis, Rahul Dravid, and Ricky Ponting to move to No. 2 on the all-time Test run-scorers list.

Root shared a crucial 144-run stand with Ollie Pope, who scored 71, before Stokes arrived and made his highest score of the series. With Stokes and Liam Dawson (21* off 48) unbeaten at stumps, England will look to stretch their lead and further dent a struggling Indian bowling attack that lacked bite, discipline, and control throughout the day.

India’s woes deepened when both Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj had to leave the field during the second session due to ankle niggles, though Bumrah returned later. On a day where they conceded over 500 runs in an innings for the first time since 2021, India now face an uphill task to claw back into the contest.

The morning began quietly, until Root flicked Bumrah for four, followed by boundaries off Siraj from both Root and Pope. Root had a moment of fortune when he survived a run-out on 22—Jadeja’s throw from point missed its mark, and neither mid-off nor mid-on backed up the stumps.
