You win some, you lose some. Probably, that best sums up India's Olympic performance this time. Heart-warming moments like
Mary Kom and
Yogeshwar Dutt's (he won three bouts in 55 minutes!) bronze medals aside, the other extreme has been disasters like Indian hockey team's 12th place finish.
Some bright medal prospects like Vijender Singh, Deepika Kumari and the Leander Paes-Sania Mirza team failed, while Vijay Kumar (silver), Gagan Narang, Saina Nehwal, Yogeshwar Dutt and Mary Kom (bronze) made us proud.
Grappler
Sushil Kumar stormed into the finals in the 66kg freestyle category, our last hope for a gold medal, raising great expectations at the Olympics.
Cricketer Shatrunjay Gaekwad says, "It's not just about the medals, we should celebrate the fact that India has started making its presence felt in several sports. Although the India-Sri Lanka cricket series was in progress, many people were still following our athletes simultaneously. That shows that it's no longer just about cricket in our country."
Athlete Pooja Chaurushi feels that the medals "will go a long way" in promoting the less talked about games. She says, "Hopefully, we can win more medals next time. Of course, we could have done better but it's heartening that we came really close in a few disciplines."
Sportspersons feel that we shouldn't run down our athletes just because they didn't win more medals. As former Indian hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi says, "There was a lot of misplaced optimism and hype surrounding our hockey team, who hadn't played against top opponents for a while. The same is true for several disciplines. Under the circumstances, you can't expect miracles. But I expect the likes of Deepika Kumari (archer) and many others to handle pressure better next time."
Agrees cricketer Ajitesh Argal, "Success stories like those of Mary Kom will inspire generations of sportspersons and we should hail not just the medal winners, but all others who have put in years of hard work for the country."
Negi puts it best, "Instead of indulging in blame games, we should now take tough decisions and also, build on the success stories. It's the system that produces champions and we have a long way to go on that front. But in several disciplines, we have shown that we are on the right track."
While they definitely deserve a celebratory toast, a richer haul in 2016 can be eyed too!
