Somdev hit the headlines by winning India's first ever gold in men's singles at the Asian Games in 2010. Born in Guwahati, Somdev started playing tennis at a very early age. He reached his first ATP Tour final at the 2009 Chennai Open.
He won the gold medal at 2010 Commonwealth Games beating Greg Jones of Australia in straight sets, 6–4, 6–2. This success was followed by the singles gold medal in the 2010 Asian Games at Guangzhou, China by beating Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in straight sets, 6–1 6–2.
Teaming up with Sanam Singh, Somdev went on to win doubles gold in the same tournament.

Somdev qualified for the 2010 French Open where he lost to Switzerland's Marco Chiudinelli, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, in the first round.
His direct entry to the 2010 US Open was followed by a dismal show on the court as he lost to South Africa's Kevin Anderson, 3-6, 4-6, 3-6, in the first round.
Somdev competed at Wimbledon in the doubles draw with former UVA teammate, Treat Huey, where they lost to Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, 6-3, 5-7, 3-6, 6-7.
The 27-yeal old boy has been awarded a wild card entry to participate in men's singles event, in London Olympics.
