Today’s travel inspiration: 6 beautiful journeys in India that are as stunning as the destination

Some trips get etched in our mind for so many reasons, because the journey itself is breathtaking enough to stay with you forever. Winding mountain roads, desert highways, tropical rail tracks, or river journeys, the list is endless, what and which place will strike that cord cannot be expressed in words. These are the routes where slowing down feels natural, looking out of the window seems natural, and the journey itself transforms into the main attraction. Here are some of the journeys that we loved the most across India where the path is just as spectacular as the place it leads to. Do share your views and experiences in the comments.

2/7

Manali to Leh Highway

This is the legendary Manali–Leh route, which is undeniably one of India’s most dramatic road journeys, with landscapes becoming dramatic every few kilometres. The route takes travellers through high-altitude passes like Rohtang, Baralacha La, and Tanglang La, each again offering surreal mountain views. Snow walls, turquoise streams, barren valleys, and sudden patches of green break the monotony of rock and ice. Many often find themselves stopping repeatedly, not because they must, but because the scenery demands attention. By the time Leh arrives, the journey has already delivered its own adventure.

3/7

Toy train to Darjeeling

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage route, is another must-do experience when in Darjeeling. It exemplifies the charm of slow travel. This tiny blue train chugs past tea gardens, hill villages, and forests, while the climb through the misty hill roads and the iconic Batasia Loop creates a sense of nostalgia that no faster mode of transport can replicate. Reaching Darjeeling is lovely, but it’s the ride, the steam whistle, the toy-like tracks, and the gentle pace, makes the experience unforgettable.

4/7

The Konkan Railway

Running between Mumbai and Goa (and further south), the Konkan Railway is one of the most picturesque rail journeys in India. The route takes travellers through forested hills, rivers, waterfalls, and tunnels, with the Arabian Sea occasionally glimmering in the distance. During the monsoon, the landscape turns lush emerald, with streams pouring down mountain slopes and mist rising from the valleys. The journey feels like moving through a giant green corridor, a natural spectacle that continues for hours.

5/7

Gangtok, Sikkim

The drive from Gangtok to Nathula Pass is an intense Himalayan experience where every curve reveals a new layer of Sikkim’s beauty. The road climbs past army camps, frozen lakes, and prayer-flag-lined slopes, with the rugged terrain becoming more dramatic as the altitude rises. Tsomgo Lake shines like a turquoise mirror on clear days, and during winter the entire route transforms into a snow-covered trail. Nathula itself is significant, but the journey’s raw, high-altitude ambience becomes the real highlight.

6/7

Jodhpur to Jaisalmer Desert Drive

Rajasthan’s desert highway from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer is a reminder that journeys through vast emptiness can be unexpectedly soothing. The landscape stretches endlessly, dotted with golden dunes, thorny shrubs, and occasional herds of camels crossing the road. Small villages appear and vanish in seconds, their mud houses blending into the terrain. Sunset is the most magical moment, with the sky turning orange and the desert glowing in warm gold. Arriving at Jaisalmer Fort is stunning, but the desert drive sets the mood long before you reach it.

7/7

Guwahati to Tawang

One of India’s most challenging yet rewarding journeys winds from Guwahati to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. The route climbs steeply through pine forests, narrow mountain roads, waterfalls, and misty valleys. The Sela Pass is the crown jewel of the journey, with its icy lake and dramatic cliffs. Weather changes instantly here, turning bright sunshine into swirling clouds within minutes. By the time travellers reach Tawang Monastery, the sense of accomplishment comes as much from the journey as from the destination.
