Whether the chants ringing through snowy corridors or the golden stupas shining in the Himalayan sun, every monastery is a journey within as much as an ascent upwards. Here's a look at some of the most unmissable monastries in Sikkim.

Rumtek Monastery (Near Gangtok)

Being Sikkim's biggest monastery and the headquarters of the Karma Kagyu school, Rumtek is accessible daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Its beautiful prayer halls, exquisite frescoes, and spectacular views of the neighboring mountains can be seen by its visitors. A small entrance fee of ₹10 is charged.

Enchey Monastery (Gangtok)

Situated only 3 km from the city center of Gangtok, Enchey Monastery is open to visitors from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day. This 200-year-old Nyingma order Vajrayana Buddhist monastery provides a peaceful setting in the middle of pine-covered hills. Admission is free but donations are welcome.

Gonjang Monastery (Near Gangtok)

Located about 7 km from Gangtok, the Gonjang Monastery is available for public viewing daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Tourists can enjoy its peaceful atmosphere and seek its religious values.

Phodong Monastery (North Sikkim)

Located about 28 km from Gangtok, Phodong Monastery is accessible daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This monastery is renowned for its ancient murals and peaceful surroundings, making it a favored spot for both pilgrims and tourists.

Ralang Monastery (Near Ravangla)

Located 6 km from Ravangla in South Sikkim, Ralang Monastery is accessible and famous for its color festivals and big collection of thangkas. The monastery commemorates the annual Pang Lhabsol festival, honoring Mount Kangchenjunga, usually in September.
