Beyond Gangtok: 5 hill stations in Sikkim that redefine peace and serenity

When Sikkim is discussed, chances are our mind instantly jumps to Gangtok, its lively capital. And if you thought this is the only place that you need to cover when here, think again. This tiny northeastern state is much more than just one postcard-worthy city. Packed with soaring Himalayan peaks, blooming rhododendrons, ancient monasteries, and tea-scented breezes, Sikkim is a hill station wonderland, and if you are ready to go beyond the usual, this is the list for you. Here are 5 hill stations in Sikkim that combine natural beauty with cultural richness, minus the usual tourist crowds.

2/6

Pelling

This charming hill town has been gradually and quietly photobombing every travel influencer’s feed. Located in West Sikkim, Pelling offers jaw-dropping views of the Kanchenjunga range, especially during sunrise when the peaks blush pink and gold.
If you forget the scenery for a second, a visit to this place will make you realise that it’s that kind of a place where you slow down and soak in nature. Walk through the Rabdentse ruins, swing across one of the country’s highest suspension bridges, or sip hot butter tea with a monastery in the backdrop, all things to do at your own pace. Pelling has managed to stay delightfully unspoiled, with just the right amount of infrastructure.

3/6

Ravangla

Perched at 7,000 ft, Ravangla is the kind of place where clouds stroll past you like lazy travelers, and every corner feels like a postcard. It’s famous for the Buddha Park, where a massive golden statue of Buddha overlooks misty hills and manicured gardens.
Bird watchers love the area for its rare Himalayan species, while spiritual seekers head to nearby Ralong Monastery. Come spring, Ravangla bursts into color during the Pang Lhabsol festival—a local celebration of culture, gratitude, and spiritual harmony.

4/6

Namchi

Namchi, the capital of South Sikkim, may look modest at first glance, but it packs a serious punch in terms of experiences. Home to gigantic religious statues, like the 118-foot-tall Guru Padmasambhava at Samdruptse and the Siddhesvara Dham (with replicas of all 12 Jyotirlingas), it’s a fascinating mix of the spiritual and the surreal.
But Namchi isn’t just about monuments. It also has a booming tea garden scene, with sprawling estates you can tour and taste from. You’ll leave with pictures, peace of mind, and probably a lot of tea.

5/6

Yuksom

Before Gangtok became the capital, Yuksom was the original seat of power in Sikkim. This small village in West Sikkim is drenched in history and shrouded in mist, making it the perfect retreat for those seeking peace, greenery, and a bit of time travel.
Yuksom is also the gateway to the Dzongri-Goecha La trek, one of the most scenic high-altitude treks in India. But even if you're not into trekking, you can explore ancient monasteries, picnic beside sparkling lakes, and lose track of time.

6/6

Lachung

Located in North Sikkim, Lachung is the base for visiting the Yumthang Valley, which is also famed as the Valley of Flowers. The best time to visit this place is during spring, when the entire region bursts into a riot of rhododendrons, while winter transforms it into a snow-covered dreamland.
The drive to Lachung is again a thrilling one, which comes complemented with winding roads, waterfalls, and steep cliffs adding to the drama. Then add to this situation, crisp mountain air and steaming bowls of thukpa from roadside cafés, and you’ll wonder why this place isn’t more famous among regular travel lovers.
