5 popular tourist spots in Japan that are earthquake prone

Japan is no stranger to seismic activity. As one of the most earthquake-prone countries on Earth, it sits atop four major tectonic plates, making it a hotbed for geological activity. This isn’t just the birthplace of sushi and bullet trains, it’s also the birthplace of seismology and tsunami science (the word tsunami itself is Japanese, meaning "harbor wave"). The devastating 2011 triple disaster, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown, was a global reminder of Japan’s seismic vulnerability.
Geophysicists say it’s all about location: Japan lies at the intersection of multiple shifting plates. More plate boundaries mean more earthquakes. Positioned right on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is literally on the edge, making it both breathtaking and breathtakingly unstable. Here are some popular tourist spots in Japan that are earthquake prone. (Canva)

2/6

Tokyo

Tokyo is home to ramen robots, anime cafés, sumo stables, and more shopping districts than you can imagine. But it’s also one of the world’s most earthquake-ready cities, and for a good reason. Sitting near multiple fault lines, Tokyo has experienced major quakes, including the infamous 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. These days, however, its skyline is filled with quake-resistant marvels. Bonus stop: Visit the Disaster Prevention Park in Odaiba if you have time. (Canva)

3/6

Yokohama

Just a short train ride from Tokyo, Yokohama is known for its beautiful waterfront, futuristic skyline, and that gigantic Ferris wheel you probably want to ride. But it’s also dangerously close to the same fault zones that make Tokyo twitchy. In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake hit Yokohama even harder than the capital. Since then, the city’s infrastructure has gotten a major seismic upgrade. The Cup Noodles Museum is here, if you want to visit. (Canva)

4/6

Sendai

Sendai is a green, modern city with a laid-back vibe, and it was also one of the places hardest hit by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The magnitude 9.0 megaquake and ensuing tsunami changed the region forever, but Sendai has bounced back with grace, greenery, and a newfound sense of preparedness. Today, it’s a great base for exploring the stunning Tōhoku region, from coastal hikes to mystical temples.
Don’t miss the earthquake memorials and museums—they’re sobering, moving, and a must-visit to understand the spirit of modern Sendai. (Canva)

5/6

Osaka

Osaka is Japan’s party city, famous for street food (takoyaki!), castles, comedy clubs, and so much more. It’s also sitting ominously close to the Nankai Trough, a massive fault line expected to trigger a major quake someday. Still, Osaka is as ready as ever. The 2018 quake was a solid reminder, but the city’s made a fast recovery. (Canva)

6/6

Hokkaido

Hokkaido may be known for powdery snow, peaceful lakes, and bear-shaped snacks, but it also sits on active tectonic terrain. In 2018, a magnitude 6.6 quake struck the island, triggering landslides and power outages. Still, Hokkaido is worth every potential wobble. Sapporo’s snow festival, Noboribetsu’s hot springs, and the wild national parks are unforgettable. (Canva)
