5 popular Indian coastal destinations to avoid right now due to Cyclone Shakthi’s effect

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for several coastal regions as Cyclone Shakthi continues to affect the western coastline, even while moving slowly away from India’s western coastline. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and rough seas are expected to persist in parts of Maharashtra, Kerala, and Karnataka, prompting authorities to caution residents and tourists alike. Beachgoers and travellers planning coastal holidays are advised to stay away from affected areas until conditions improve, as several popular destinations remain under weather watch.

2/6

Raigad, Maharashtra

Raigad district, part of the Konkan coast, is experiencing heavy rainfall and strong winds due to the cyclone’s residual impact. Coastal areas and beaches, including popular spots like Alibaug and Kihim, are best avoided as of now, till the situation calms down. Tourists are strongly advised to avoid venturing into the sea or travelling along the coast until conditions improve.

3/6

Kochi, Kerala

Kerala’s commercial hub, Kochi, is witnessing persistent heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The backwaters and coastal areas are particularly vulnerable. The winds have made sea travel hazardous, prompting authorities to suspend fishing and boating activities temporarily. Tourists visiting Kochi are advised to remain indoors and refrain from exploring beaches or waterfront areas.

4/6

Puducherry

Puducherry is facing moderate to heavy rainfall due to Cyclone Shakthi’s lingering influence. It’s better to stay away from outdoor sightseeing and water-based activities till the situation improves. If you are out and about, especially along the coastline, be extra careful as it can get dangerous real quick in case of sudden rain and storm.Tourists are advised to practice caution and follow daily weather updates before planning any further travels.

5/6

Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh

Visakhapatnam, often called the “City of Destiny,” is famous for its scenic beaches and the Kailasagiri hilltop park. However, Cyclone Shakthi has brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to the city, causing rough sea conditions along the Bay of Bengal. Both locals and tourists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially near the shoreline.

6/6

Mangalore, Coastal Karnataka

Coastal Karnataka, including Mangalore, is witnessing heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms until October 10. The rough sea conditions have made the beaches unsafe, and fishing activities have been temporarily halted. Mangalore’s famous Panambur and Tannirbhavi beaches are experiencing strong waves and high tides, making them unsuitable for swimming or beach recreation. Travellers and locals are urged to exercise caution, avoid venturing into the sea, and follow updates from the IMD regarding weather warnings.
