10 waterfalls in India which look straight out of a fairytale

India’s diverse geography has given it some of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls. From the forested valleys of Meghalaya to the rugged Western Ghats and the hidden heartlands of Chhattisgarh, these waterfalls aren’t just about their height or volume; they also create great travel memories. Whether you’re chasing monsoon magic or planning a serene escape, these ten waterfalls across India look straight out of a fairytale, they are wild, dramatic, and utterly captivating.

2/11

Krang Suri Falls, Meghalaya

Perhaps the most photogenic waterfall in Meghalaya, Krang Suri is hidden amidst the Jaintia Hills. Its surreal turquoise-blue waters shimmer beneath dappled sunlight, forming a crystal-clear pool so pristine that you can see the pebbles at the bottom. The short trek to reach the waterfall adds to the anticipation, and once there, the scene is pure magic, tranquil, untouched, and unforgettable.

3/11

Wei Sawdong Falls, Meghalaya

A hidden treasure near Cherrapunji, Wei Sawdong Falls is a three-tiered wonder that appears almost too perfect to be real. Each tier spills into an emerald pool that looks like a natural infinity basin carved into the cliffs. The trek to reach it is steep and slippery, but the reward is extraordinary. The view is of layered cascades flowing amidst dense greenery.

4/11

Nohsngithiang Falls (Seven Sisters Falls), Meghalaya

Close to Mawsmai village stands the iconic Nohsngithiang Falls, also known as the Seven Sisters Falls, where seven gleaming streams tumble spectacularly down sheer limestone cliffs. In the monsoon months, when the waterfalls are at their fullest, the flowing ribbons of water unite into a single white veil, creating a striking contrast against the lush green hillsides.

5/11

Dudhsagar Waterfall, Goa

Flowing through the heart of the Western Ghats, Dudhsagar, translated to “Sea of Milk,” is one of India’s most magnificent waterfalls. Cascading down from over 300 metres, it appears as though an endless sheet of white milk is spilling down the rocks. The waterfall is surrounded by dense tropical forests. What makes it even more surreal is the sight of a train crossing the old arched bridge in front of the roaring cascade.

6/11

Nohkalikai Falls, Meghalaya

Towering at 340 metres, Nohkalikai is India’s tallest plunge waterfall and perhaps its most hauntingly beautiful. It drops from a steep cliff into a pool of turquoise water that glows like a jewel amid the verdant valley of Cherrapunji. The contrast of green cliffs and the aquamarine basin below creates an unforgettable view.

7/11

Jog Falls, Karnataka

Located on the Sharavathi River, Jog Falls is a breathtaking symphony of four streams - Raja, Rani, Roarer, and Rocket, each tumbling from a height of about 830 feet. The surrounding forests add to the mystique, and from the viewpoint, the falls are a spectacle of sheer raw beauty. Jog Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in India.

8/11

Chitrakote Falls, Chhattisgarh

Chitrakote Falls is a horseshoe-shaped cascade, formed by the Indravati River, spanning an impressive width of 300 metres, especially during the monsoon. This is India’s widest waterfall. The view is best around dusk, when the falls glow golden under the setting sun. This is also one of the most photogenic waterfalls in India.

9/11

Tirathgarh Falls, Chhattisgarh

Nestled deep within Kanger Valley National Park, Tirathgarh Falls splits into multiple streams as it descends over layered limestone rocks, resembling a white lace curtain cascading through the forest. The surrounding caves and ancient formations add a touch of mystery, making Tirathgarh a scenic wonder.

10/11

Thoseghar Waterfalls, Maharashtra

Set near Satara in the Sahyadris, Thoseghar Falls is a cluster of tall, narrow cascades that plunge into a deep, misty valley. During the monsoon, the region transforms into a lush paradise. Standing at the viewpoint, you will get perfect photo-ops.

11/11

Athirappilly Falls, Kerala

The mighty Athirappilly Falls flows majestically through the lush Sholayar forests of Kerala. Its broad curtain of water spans 80 feet high and 330 feet wide, creating a breathtaking wall of white amidst dense tropical greenery. It’s no surprise that filmmakers and travellers alike return here. The movie Bahubali was filmed here.
