Jyotirlingas and Shiva

Jyotirlingas are special, holy places for Hindus where it is believed that Lord Shiva appeared as a glowing light. There are 12 of these holy sites in India, like Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi and Somnath in Gujarat. People visit these temples and jyotirlingas to pray and connect with the energy of Lord Shiva. These shrines are worshipped because they represent the immense strength and energy of Lord Shiva. People believe that by visiting these places, they can receive blessings and spiritual peace. These jyotirlingas are like the special spots where devotees can feel the closest to Lord Shiva.

​Kedarnath Jyotirlinga

Surrounded by the grand Himalayas in Uttarakhand, is the very famous Kedarnath Jyotirlinga. It's a pilgrimage site that is evidence to the deep devotion and spiritual closeness devotees have to Lord Shiva. According to legends, this is where Lord Shiva, in the form of a bull, hid from the Pandavas, leaving behind a hump when Bhima recognised him. The old temple isn't just beautiful because of its design, but also the peace it offers to devotees who trek 20+ kilometers just to have Shiva’s darshan. The Kedarnath trek is the perfect one for finding oneself and connecting with the divine.

​Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga

Located on the banks of holy river Shipra in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, is Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. Mahakaleshwar literally means the lord of kaal(Time) and it is believed that by his grace you get free from the circle of time and rebirth. The atmosphere here is filled with devotion, especially during the lively Maha Shivaratri festival and the Bhasm aarti that happens every morning. Mahakaleshwar has been welcoming devoted worshippers who seek blessings from this powerful deity.

Vishwanath (Kashi Vishwanath) Jyotirlinga

Located in the holy city of Banaras, near the Ghats of Ganga, is the Vishwanath or the Kashi Vishwanath jyotirlinga. Both the city of Varanasi and this jyotirlinga represent spiritual depth and cultural legacy of India. According to legends, this is where the first Jyotirlinga was established and manifested itself (swayambhu). The Kashi Vishwanath temple's ancient glory and its role as an important spiritual place in Hinduism attracts devotees from distant places, creating an environment filled with devotion and a sense of connection with the city of Kashi. It is also notable that Kashi is believed to be the eternal city and home of Shiva himself .

Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga

Located in Tamil Nadu, near the great Indian ocean, is the Rameshwaram jyotirlinga. It is a place of spiritual purity and dedication with the light rustle of waves and winds. Legend has it that Lord Rama set up a lingam here to ask for forgiveness for the sin of Bramhhatya after killing Ravana, who was a Brahmin. People visit Rameshwaram to seek blessings and conduct rituals, with the belief that a trip to this holy place cleanses them of their wrongdoings. The temple's amazing architecture and connections to old stories have made Rameshwaram a respected spot for those seeking spiritual enlightenment.

​Somnath Jyotirlinga

Located on the Gujarat coast, Somnath jyotirlinga is the epitome of strength and strong devotion. Despite being destroyed and reconstructed multiple times, the temple represents unshakeable faith and dedication to Lord Shiva and the power of his devotion. Legends suggest it was initially built by Som, the god of the moon himself . People visit Somnath to connect to its history and seek blessings in an atmosphere filled with religious and holy energies. The temple's aura and history, along with the backdrop of the Arabian Sea is sure to bring up a sense of respect and a deep spiritual feeling.

Baijnath (Vaidyanath) Jyotirlinga

Situated in Deoghar, Jharkhand, Baijnath Jyotirlinga’s story is one not known to all. It is said that after great meditation and offerings when Ravana was about to take Lord Shiva to Lanka, the Gods put together a plan. Shiva warned Ravana that if during the way to Lanka, the Linga is put down anywhere, he will be there forever. On the way, when Varuna entered Ravana and developed in him the urge to urinate, Ravana put Shiva on this very spot, thereby the Baijnath jyotirlinga in Deoghar came into being. This holy place attracts worshippers seeking relief from illnesses and wanting spiritual revival. Celebrated for its beautiful architecture, Baijnath has the power to nurture a deep spiritual connection and heal people’s souls.
