Diwali 2025: How to set a traditional puja altar at home

Diwali, the festival of lights, is more than just fireworks and sweets—it's a deeply spiritual occasion dedicated to inviting wealth, wisdom, and well-being into our lives. The Lakshmi Puja, performed on Diwali night, is the heart of the celebration. Setting up a puja altar at home is a meaningful tradition that connects the family to divine energies and aligns the home with positive vibrations. Here's a simple guide to help you set up your Diwali altar with devotion and clarity.

2/5

Choose a clean and sacred space

Begin by selecting a quiet, clean spot in your home for the altar. Ideally, choose a space in the north or east direction, as these are considered auspicious according to Vastu Shastra. Clean the area thoroughly, both physically and energetically. You may sprinkle Ganga jal (holy water) or light incense to purify the surroundings. Lay a clean red, yellow, or white cloth over a small table or platform. This cloth becomes the sacred base of your altar.

3/5

arrange idols and sacred items with care**

Place idols or framed pictures of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha and optionally Goddess Saraswati on the altar. Lakshmi should be in the center, Ganesha on her left (as you face the idols), and Saraswati on her right. If you’re using a Kalash (sacred copper pot), fill it with water, place mango leaves around the rim, and a coconut on top. This Kalash symbolizes the source of life and abundance. Place a few grains of rice beneath the idols and keep coins or notes in front of Lakshmi to invite prosperity.

4/5

Decorate with devotion and symbolism

Now, decorate your altar with Diyas (oil lamps), fresh flowers, Rangoli, and torans (door hangings). Light at least one ghee diya near the idols as a symbol of inner light. Use kumkum, haldi, and sandalwood paste To draw symbols like the swastik, OM, or shree near the altar or on the Kalash. You can also use garlands, scented candles, and bells to enhance the sacred vibe. These decorations are not just aesthetic—they hold symbolic meanings of purity, joy, and protection

5/5

Prepare the puja thali and perform rituals

The puja thali should contain all essentials: incense sticks, camphor, roli, akshat (rice), sweets, dry fruits, fruits, and a ghee diya. Begin the puja by invoking Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles. Then proceed to offer flowers, sweets, and prayers to Goddess Lakshmi. Chant the Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 names) or simply recite heartfelt mantras. Offer aarti using camphor and sing the Lakshmi Aarti with family members. Distribute prasad at the end of the puja.
