The magical horseshoe that transformed a student's exam destiny
By Bhannu Arora
As I look back, I can still vividly recall the sprawling bungalow we moved into during one of my father's army transfers. It was a grand, isolated place, surrounded by nature's bounty. There was this big storeroom that always intrigued me and my brother, Arjun. We never ventured there at night, though; it had an eerie, mysterious aura.
One sunny afternoon, my curiosity led me to a peculiar find in the storeroom - a horseshoe. It lay there, slightly rusted but still sturdy, amidst the clutter. I remember asking Sakharam, our housekeeper, about it. He had a wealth of stories and superstitions, and he told me it was a charm for good luck.
With exams looming over my head, and my absolute dislike for mathematics gnawing at me, I thought, "Why not?" So, I placed the horseshoe on my study table, hoping for a bit of that promised luck.
My mother always insisted that Arjun and I focus on our studies, but the call of the wild, the adventures waiting in the lush surroundings of our home, were too tempting. I spent more time outside than with my books. But the night before my math exam, I tried to study, albeit half-heartedly. The formulas seemed like a tangled web, making little sense.
The day of the exam arrived, and with a heavy heart, I entered the exam hall, expecting the worst. But to my utter surprise, the paper had only those few questions I had glanced at the night before. I completed the exam with an ease I hadn't anticipated.
When the results came, I was stunned. I had scored low in everything, except for math. Arjun joked about the horseshoe being my lucky charm, and I couldn't help but wonder. I've never been one to believe in such things, but that horseshoe, it seemed to have worked some magic.
From then on, that horseshoe traveled with me. Across India, through all the places my dad got posted, it was always there, on my study desk. And till this day, it sits there, a silent reminder of that mysterious storeroom, a testament to a child's belief in magic, and perhaps, a token of luck that once graced my life in the most unexpected way.
