How to identify and respond to verbal abuse in a relationship

Verbal abuse, unlike physical abuse, cannot be identified easily. The effects that verbal abuse leaves behind are depression, anxiety, low self-esteem issues that last for a long time. There’s no doubt that if your partner is causing you emotional scars, you are facing verbal abuse in the relationship, which by no means is acceptable. In account of this, we bring to you some identifiable signs of verbal abuse in a relationship.

2/7

Tone of voice and what they say

Speaking loudly or raising the voice often is a big sign of your partner resorting to verbal abuse. Additionally, their comments about your body, appearance, personality may make you feel inferior or doubt yourself. If your partner always communicates negatively and says things that hurt your feelings, then this is a huge sign of verbal abuse.

3/7

Manipulation or victim-blaming

If you ever try to reason with your partner about how their actions are affecting you, chances are high that they will make it all about themselves. They will blame you for their actions and behaviour and manipulate you to feel bad about yourself. They will further direct you to do things uncomfortable for you, as a means of compensation.

4/7

Low self-esteem and constant fear

If you’re suffering from constant low self-esteem issues because of the lack of support and confidence from your partner, then it’s time you address the issue of verbal abuse in your relationship. You also fear that at any moment, your partner might horrifically yell at you or engage in a fight that usually ends up in tears and despair.

5/7

Seek advice from family and friends

The first step to resolve this problem is to address the issue head-on. Lean onto your family members and friends who can support and make you feel better. If you’re feeling too low, spending time with your family away on a trip should make you feel better.

6/7

Set definite boundaries and be powerful

Don’t let your partner overpower you. Be firm while addressing the issue and don’t let your emotions take over as your partner can see this as an opportunity to hurt you even more. You can also set boundaries as to what you can or cannot accept in the relationship.

7/7

If nothing improves, leave them

Separating from your partner is the last option when nothing else seems to work. You shouldn’t continue staying with someone who doesn’t understand you, instead keeps on verbally abusing you. Your mental health and peace come above anybody else, and so, it’s necessary for you to leave your verbally abusive partner.
