From breaking his spine to winning a polo match: How Jaipur's Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh recovered from a severe car crash that left him bedridden
Sudden accidents have the power to change the entire trajectory of a person's life. From a happy-go-lucky person, one can transform into a sullen being with no hope for the future. In such cases the only things that can change the fate are courage and hope. Hope to dream for a different future and the courage to begin working towards it.On June 4, 2024, Jaipur's Prince Padmanabh Singh, Maharaja Narendra Singh and Princess Gauravi Kumari were enjoying their vacation in Scotland when they faced a severe car crash. The three of them were sent to recuperate in a hospital in London. “I was driving the car when the accident happened in Scotland. It was a serious crash, and Padmanabh suffered three major fractures in his spine,” said his father, Narendra Singh, at the time.In an Instagram post today, the now Maharaj shared how he broke his spine in multiple places while his father and sister each faced their own complex set of injuries. After undergoing surgery, Padmanabh has a plate and four screws inserted in his spine. He was advised to stay away from horses and polo for at least a year, while doctors told him that he might never play again.
However, the will to recover and love for the sport inspired him to pursue the road to recovery despite the struggles.“It was a very difficult time for my family and me. We were all affected, and I was told by doctors that I might never play again. One doctor specifically said I couldn’t ride for at least a year,” he recalled. But he remained determined. “I focused on physiotherapy. My only goal was to get back on a horse,” he said.“I was completely shaken after the accident. I kept working on myself, and eventually, I was able to return to polo,” he added.

Back on the horse

After a year of rigorous physiotherapy and determined dedication, the Jaipur royal and international polo player was back on the polo grounds. He helped the Jaipur Polo Team win 12 tournaments, reaching the semi-finals in 8 and finishing as runners-up in 2.Speaking about his goal in the final match, he said: “I often forget about these things, but this particular goal had a big impact. It was the reason we won the tournament,” he said. “It’s a blessing from Govind Dev Ji that this season we were able to perform our best,” he added about his recovery.“We were all worried when we found out he went near the horses so soon, but his dedication was remarkable. Just 7-8 weeks after the accident, he was back playing polo,” his father added at the time.

Life of a Prince

Two years later, the Maharaja took to Instagram to share gratitude for his journey of recovery. "Today, more than anything, I feel grateful. Grateful that we’re here. Grateful to everyone who helped us through this difficult period. The experience changed us in many ways, but it also brought us closer as a family and gave us a deeper appreciation for life and the things that truly matter," he wrote in the caption while sharing images of recovery."Two years on, we’re stronger than we knew we could be, and we’re looking ahead with gratitude, perspective, and hope," he added. As the titular head of Jaipur's royal family, Padmanabh manages the family's vast historical estate. He is a highly accomplished polo player who has competed and represented India globally. He has also walked the runway for luxury brands such as Dolce & Gabbana and Giorgio Armani, and he was featured on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia List. Moreover, he also works closely with the Princess Diya Kumari Foundation, which focuses on empowering women and girls in Rajasthan.
