Signs your child is ready for a phone

Children are curious souls and much of what they learn is through their parents. Being surrounded by adults who are constantly on their gadgets is likely to make them interested in phones, tablets, TVs and other devices. But as parents, how do you decide when is the right time to give your child a phone?

Is there a right or wrong age to give your child a phone?

Some experts say 12-14 is the ideal age to start using a smartphone. However, generally speaking, there is no right or wrong age to start using a phone. Every kid is different and unique and each child has their own personality. Depending on when you feel your child is ready, you can give your child a phone. but if you're still confused and indecisive, here are some things you should know as a parent.

It all comes down to how responsible they are

Ask yourself whether your child is responsible enough? Do they take good care of their belongings, will they be able to make good use of their device, do they respect their freedom and will they be able to effectively use the privileges they get? All of these questions play a crucial role in deciding if your child is ready. As long as they know what they're doing, they're organized and are aware of the consequences, they're all set to start using a mobile device.

4/6

They should be able to break away

One of the downsides of using smartphones is digital addiction. Once you start using it, you're likely to be dependent on it, which can be dangerous for your child. That said, find out whether or not your child has it in them to break away. Make sure they have other things they enjoy doing, so that a mobile device does not hamper their daily routine.

5/6

How well do they understand online threats?

Another thing that your child should be aware of before using a smartphone is online threats. Cyberbullying, phishing, malware, gaming addiction and online gambling are some of the digital threats your child could be exposed to, which is why you must ensure that your children are well-aware of these threats and know how to fight it back.

Your responsibility as a parent

As a parent, knowing and figuring out if your child 'really' needs a cellphone is important. To determine that, not only should you know your child well, you should also be there and have time to teach them how to use a cell phone properly. Set limits and see that your child is mature enough to accept and stand by them. Furthermore, as parents, know your limits too. Be a good example for your kids and show them what it's like to break away from mobile devices when needed.
