Make your kids try these 5 exercises that are recommended to grow height

Height growth in children is influenced by genetics, nutrition and physical activity. While genetics plays a major role, studies show that regular exercise during childhood and adolescence can stimulate growth by promoting bone health, improving posture and enhancing the secretion of growth hormone. Here are five exercises scientifically recommended to promote height growth in children.

2/7

Stretching exercises

Stretching enhances flexibility, decompresses the spine and promotes better posture, which is essential for maximal height potential. According to a 2018 study published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science, regular stretching exercises improve spinal flexibility and help elongate muscles around the spine, which positively contributes to height growth during developmental stages. Stretching also improves posture, making children appear taller and promoting vertebral health.

3/7

Swimming

Swimming involves whole-body movements that flex and extend the body's muscles and joints, effectively stretching and decompressing the spine. As per a 2016 study in the Asian Journal of Sports Medicine, swimming increases growth hormone release, improving the overall growth and physical development of children. The resistance and buoyancy of water support longitudinal body growth while reducing spinal load.

4/7

Jumping and impact exercises

Jumping activities apply mechanical load to bones, triggering osteoblast activity which increases bone mineral density and stimulates growth plate activity. A 2007 landmark longitudinal study published in The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research found that impact-loading exercises like jumping significantly increase bone mineral content in children, contributing to skeletal growth. These exercises enhance bone strength and potentially stimulate height increase.

5/7

Basketball

Basketball combines running, jumping, stretching and quick movements, which collectively stimulate growth hormone secretion and improve posture. A 2018 research analysed by the European Journal of Applied Physiology highlighted that basketball players had enhanced height growth during puberty compared to non-athletes, largely due to frequent stretching and jumping movements.

6/7

Cycling

Cycling promotes lower limb muscle activity, applying beneficial mechanical stress on bones and joints, which supports growth. A 2019 study in Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness Journal showed that children who cycled regularly demonstrated improved bone density and musculoskeletal development, directly related to height gain potential.

7/7

Takeaway

These five exercises — stretching, swimming, jumping, basketball and cycling — are supported by scientific studies as effective ways to support height growth in children. Combined with proper nutrition and ample sleep, regular engagement in these exercises can help children reach their maximal genetic height potential by stimulating growth hormones, strengthening bones and improving posture.
